Ruling, Opposition Clash Over Chief Justice's Audit Refusal
Democratic Party insists on testimony; People Power Party condemns power abuse violating separation of powers
By Yu Jong-heon Published 2026.10.05. 10:55 The Chosun Daily News / 조선일보 The ruling and opposition parties clashed on the 5th over Chief Justice Jo Hee-de’s refusal to attend a parliamentary audit as a witness, one day before the audit. The Democratic Party of Korea urged Chief Justice Jo to appear in person at the parliamentary audit, while the People Power Party argued the Democratic Party’s demand lacked legitimacy. Chief Justice Jo Hee-de commutes to the Supreme Court in Seocho-gu, Seoul. /News1 Lee Joo-hee, the Democratic Party’s floor spokesperson, said in a written briefing the same day, “Chief Justice Jo, as a regular witness, must appear directly at the parliamentary audit and answer all suspicions before the public.” The spokesperson added, “Under the National Assembly Testimony and Evaluation Act, anyone must comply with a request to appear as a witness, regardless of other laws,” and emphasized, “Chief Justice Jo is naturally no exception.” He continued, “Chief Justice Jo publicly stated to the media that he would address issues through the parliamentary audit. Yet, just four days later, he reversed his stance and refused to appear as a witness. Can the head of the judiciary so easily retract words made before the public?” He further urged, “Do not hide behind a thin legal opinion that does not align with legal interpretation. Tomorrow, boldly appear as a witness at the parliamentary audit and explain yourself directly before the public.” Jeong Jeom-sig, the People Power Party’s floor leader, raised “seven reasons why Chief Justice Jo should not attend the parliamentary audit as a witness” on his Facebook page the same day. Jeong stated, “Chief Justice Jo should not appear as a witness at the parliamentary audit,” and added, “The Democratic Party claims Chief Justice Jo’s attendance is necessary, citing ‘no sacred areas.’ If there are no sacred areas, trials involving President Lee Jae Myung should immediately resume.” Jeong argued, “The unilateral adoption of a witness by the ruling party, ignoring bipartisan agreement, lacks legitimacy as a representative body of the people,” and stated, “Summoning the Chief Justice, one of the three branches of government, to a parliamentary audit is an abuse of power and high-handedness by the National Assembly that violates the separation of powers.” He also said, “If the Chief Justice is summoned as a witness for judicial issues, it would be fair for the President to also appear as a witness at an executive branch parliamentary audit.” · This article has been translated by Upstage Solar AI. |
