I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby’s house I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited. People were not invited—they went there. They got into automobiles which bore them out to Long Island and somehow they ended up at Gatsby’s door. Once there they were introduced by somebody who knew Gatsby and after that they conducted themselves according to the rules of behavior associated with amusement parks. Sometimes they came and went without having met Gatsby at all, came for the party with a simplicity of heart that was its own ticket of admission.

I had been actually invited. A chauffeur in a uniform of robin’s egg blue crossed my lawn early that Saturday morning with a surprisingly formal note from his employer—the honor would be entirely Gatsby’s, it said, if I would attend his “little party” that night. He had seen me several times and had intended to call on me long before but a peculiar combination of circumstances had prevented it—signed Jay Gatsby in a majestic hand.

- I had been actually invited : 앞 단락에서도 had actually been invited라는 표현이 나온다. 이 집에 실제로 초대받아서 온 사람이 정말로 얼마 안 된다는 것을 알게 해준다.

닉은 개츠비의 저택 옆에 매우 허름한 집을 세내어 살고 있었는데 정식으로 초대 받은 사람들이 몇 되지 않는데 그 가운데 닉이 들어간 것은 그냥 지나칠 일은 아니다. 개츠비는 닉을 초대하기 위해서 자기 기사를 보내고 직접 사인까지 한 초대장을 보낸 것은 개츠비가 닉에 대해서 알고 있었다는 증거가 된다. 개츠비는 닉이 데이지와 7촌 관계라는 것을 알고 있었던 것으로 보인다. 매우 먼 친척 관계이기는 하지만 어떻게든 데이지와의 연결고리를 찾아보려고 한 것으로 볼 수 있다.

Dressed up in white flannels I went over to his lawn a little after seven and wandered around rather illat-ease among swirls and eddies of people I didn’t know–though here and there was a face I had noticed on the commuting train. I was immediately struck by the number of young Englishmen dotted about; all well dressed, all looking a little hungry and all talking in low earnest voices to solid and prosperous Americans. I was sure that they were selling something: bonds or insurance or automobiles. They were, at least, agonizingly aware of the easy money in the vicinity and convinced that it was theirs for a few words in the right key.

Englishmen – Americans : 영국인은 단정하고 예의바르며 진지하지만 좀 배가 고프고 미국인은 solid and prosperous하다고 묘사한다. 영국인과 미국인의 비교 부분은 초고에는 없었다. 소설을 완성하는 단계에서 이 부분을 써 넣은 것으로 보인다. 식민지 종주국인 영국인이 식민지였던 미국인의 환심을 사려고 하는 것은 모두 돈 때문이라는 인상을 주고 있다.

agonizingly aware of the easy money in the vicinity : 식민지 종주국이었던 영국인이 식민지였던 미국의 부자에게 접근해서 돈을 버는 일은 적잖은 고뇌가 동반되는 일이라는 뜻이다. 돈 앞에서 자기의 권위나 자존심을 버려야 하는 입장을 묘사하고 있다.

As soon as I arrived I made an attempt to find my host but the two or three people of whom I asked his whereabouts stared at me in such an amazed way and denied so vehemently any knowledge of his movements that I slunk off in the direction of the cocktail table–the only place in the garden where a single man could linger without looking purposeless and alone.

I was on my way to get roaring drunk from sheer embarrassment when Jordan Baker came out of the house and stood at the head of the marble steps, leaning a little backward and looking with contemptuous interest down into the garden.

Welcome or not, I found it necessary to attach myself to someone before I should begin to address cordial remarks to the passers-by.

cordial : 상냥한, 화기애애한. 앞에 44:10에서는 술의 종류 가운데 하나로 cordials이 나왔다.

“Hello!” I roared, advancing toward her. My voice seemed unnaturally loud across the garden.

- roared : 초고에는 called로 되어 있다. 앞의 roaring과 맞추기 위해서 바꿔 쓴 것으로 보인다.

“I thought you might be here,” she responded absently as I came up. “I remembered you lived next door to—-”

초고에는 “I know you’d be here,” she said, “I remember you told me you lived next door.”로 되어 있다. 상당히 세심하게 퇴고를 거듭한 것을 볼 수 있다.

She held my hand impersonally, as a promise that she’d take care of me in a minute, and gave ear to two girls in twin yellow dresses who stopped at the foot of the steps.

- impersonally ~ gave ear to two girls : impersonally는 앞 문장의 absently와 함께 베이커 양의 냉담한 태도를 알게 해주는 표현이다. 조던은 무심한 듯하면서도 사람들의 가십성 대화에 매우 큰 관심을 가지고 있다. 데이지의 집에서도 도도한 모습과 함께 톰과 데이지의 대화를 엿듣는 경박스러운 태도를 보여주고 있어 이중적인 성격을 가진 인물이라는 것을 알게 해준다.

“Hello!” they cried together. “Sorry you didn’t win.”

That was for the golf tournament. She had lost in the finals the week before.

“You don’t know who we are,” said one of the girls in yellow, “but we met you here about a month ago.”

“You’ve dyed your hair since then,” remarked Jordan, and I started but the girls had moved casually on and her remark was addressed to the premature moon, produced like the supper, no doubt, out of a caterer’s basket. With Jordan’s slender golden arm resting in mine we descended the steps and sauntered about the garden. A tray of cocktails floated at us through the twilight and we sat down at a table with the two girls in yellow and three men, each one introduced to us as Mr. Mumble.

started : 흠칫하다. 15:5에서도 사용된 단어이다. 그때도 베이커 양의 말에 대해서 닉이 보인 반응을 started라고 했다: At this point Miss Baker said: “Absolutely!” with such suddenness that I started—it was the first word she had uttered since I came into the room.(15:4-6)

두 아가씨 가운데 한 아가씨가 조단을 보자마자 결승전에서 패했다는 사실을 지적하자 기분이 상한 조단이 그 아가씨에게 머리 염색한 것을 지적하면서 멋을 부리느라고 애썼네, 라는 뜻으로 빈정거리는 말을 했고, 그것을 들은 닉은 예상치 못한 조단의 말투에 좀 놀라는 반응을 보인다.

premature moon : 어떤 사건이 성급하게 또는 예상치 못하게 일어난다는 이미지를 암시할 수 있다.

produced like the supper, no doubt, out of a caterer’s basket : 정성이 들어가지 않고 고급스럽게만 만들어진 것. 달은 사람에게 감정을 불러 일으키는 대상인데 이른 달은 감정을 불러 일으키지 못한다. 조단이 말을 예상치 못하게 했고, 그 말을 들어야 할 사람은 이미 자리를 옮겨갔고, 그렇게 말이 빗나간 조던이나 그 말을 들었어야 할 여자나 전혀 개의치 않는 태도는 이 파티의 분위기를 말해준다. 개성이 없이 음식 공급업자가 천편일률적으로 만든 저녁식사와 같다는 것이다.

Mr. Mumble : mumble은 ‘중얼거리다, 웅얼거리다’라는 뜻. 세 남자가 각자 이름을 소개하는데 제대로 들리지 않아서 뭐라고 중얼거리는 소리 밖에는 들리지 않았다는 뜻으로 볼 수 있다.

“Do you come to these parties often?” inquired Jordan of the girl beside her.

“The last one was the one I met you at,” answered the girl, in an alert, confident voice. She turned to her companion: “Wasn’t it for you, Lucille?”

It was for Lucille, too.

inquired ~ alert, confident voice : 조단은 캐묻는다(inquired). 앞에 자기 말을 무시하고 그냥 가버린 데 대한 감정의 여운이 남아 있는 듯하다. 그것을 느낀 아가씨는 경계하면서도 확신에 찬 목소리로 대답한다. 경계하면서 뭔가 숨기려고 하면서 그 숨기는 것을 덮어버리기 위해서 확신에 찬 목소리로 말하는 것으로 볼 수 있다.

머틀의 뉴욕 아파트 아래층에 살던 사진작가 맥키의 부인의 이름도 Lucille였다. 그 사실을 환기시키기도 하는 문장이다. 다음 문장에도 Lucille가 명기된다. 익명의 공간에서 이름이 두드러지게 반복적으로 언급되는 것은 이 Lucille라는 이름에 주목하게 하는 의도가 있을 것으로 추정된다. 여기 Lucille는 새로운 evening gown에 대해서 말하고 있고, 머틀은 맥키의 부인 Lucille에게 자기의 dress를 주고 새 것을 사겠다고 말하고 있다. Lucille의 어원은 라틴어에서 유래되었으며, 기본적으로 "빛"을 의미하는 단어 lux에서 비롯되었다.

“I like to come,” Lucille said. “I never care what I do, so I always have a good time. When I was here last I tore my gown on a chair, and he asked me my name and address–inside of a week I got a package from Croirier’s with a new evening gown in it.”
