가정법의 시제 표현은 익혀둔다                     출제빈도 및 가능성 ★☆☆

출제 경향: if를 이용한 가정법은 시제를 올바로 사용할 수 있어야 한다.

1. 가정법 과거(if+과거, S+조동사 과거형～): 현재 사살에 반대되거나 불가능한 것을 언급할 때 쓴다.                                                      * if절에 조동사의 과거형을 쓰기도 하니 주의한다.

   If I got an invitation, I could go there right now. → 현재 초대받지 않은 상황

   If I shouldn't have indigestion, I could eat it. → 현재 소화불량에 걸린 상태

2. 가정법 과거완료(if+had+pp, S+조동사 과거형+have+pp): 과거 사실에 반대되거나 불가능한 것을 언급할 때 쓴다.

   If she had had enough money, she could have bought the car. → 과거에 돈이 없어서 차를 사지 못함

해설

(A) until 이하의 절은 부사절이므로 미래 시제는 현재 시제로 표현해야 한다. ☞ 25강 참조

(B) if절의 시제가 were to 형태이므로 주절에는 조동사의 과거형을 써야 한다. were to는 불가능한 미래의 사실을 가정할 때 쓴다.

(C) if절에는 미래 시제를 쓸 수 없으므로 현재 시제로 표현한다. if절이 현재일 때에는 어떤 사실을 반대로 가정하는 가정법이 아니라 단순하게 추정하는 조건문이 된다.

해석

국제 우주 정거장에 탑승한 우주인들이 식량이 고갈될 위험에 처해있다고 NASA가 전한다. 보급품이 바닥나서 미국인 Leroy Chiao와 러시아인 Salizhan Sharipov는 크리스마스에 무인 캡슐을 통해 새로운 보급품이 도착할 때까지는 덜 먹어야 한다. 만약에 보급선이 배달에 실패한다면 두 명의 우주인은 6개월간의 임무의 겨우 절반인 1월 중순에는 지구로 귀환하라는 명령을 받게 될 것이다. 만약에 그들의 귀환이 성공한다면 그것은 우주 정거장에 지속적으로 사람이 근무하지 않게 될 4년만의 첫 사례가 될 것이다.
