29. From Korea to the World!
The ‘Barnabas Foundation’ that started like that finally began its normal work through the New Year’s ceremony in 2031. And the first task was the missionary dispatch that the chairman’s church had been planning. So, I explained to the chairman again about the plan to promote missionary work in a new dimension rather than the previous way, so that the church sending the missionary could fulfill its role and responsibility, and the missionary going to the mission field could go to the field and do his ministry properly, and the chairman explained such matters at the church meeting. However, since the chairman’s thoughts that he understood in his head were not properly persuaded by the church members, the church meeting’s opinions became divided, and it became a headache as it emerged as a current issue at the chairman’s church. Then the chairman told him about such a situation and said that he did not know how to resolve it. So I suggested that they prepare a special program for the church members, and after the Sunday service, I suggested that we open a completely new program called the ‘Missionary Dispatch Preparation Program’ including the church members, evangelists, and deacons. Through this program, we should look into the awareness of missions, the awareness of different situations in the mission field, the role of missionaries, and the background needed to carry them out, and what is the best for the sending church and the sponsoring agency to do? How can we directly participate in the details of the actual mission and provide effective support, rather than just putting up a name as a sponsor and a sending church? We decided to make time to understand about this, and for this, first, all the directors gathered again to resolve the issues that occurred in the current chairman’s church, so that the work we want to do can be well understood and promoted, and furthermore, since it will become the work of the church I pastor in the future, we decided to study each part of this intensively and challenge it, and after this, we decided to have a special joint program titled ‘For a new mission…!’ with all the elders who are members of the church, as well as the deacons and ordained deacons, participating in each other’s church, and we decided to hold it at the chairman’s prayer center, which is close, has good air, is quiet, and has auxiliary facilities already prepared, starting at 2 PM on Sunday. However, this time, there was a proposal to first open the opportunity for pastors and senior members of churches in the Seoul and Gyeonggi-do area to participate, and to advertise it extensively in various Christian media outlets. If we first present the image of dedication to the Korean church and create a time to reconsider the direction of missions, the missionary methods of the Korean church will eventually change. As the other directors agreed to this, each church began a special prayer for this from today, and each church decided to dedicate itself financially to this work according to its capacity. The work within the ‘Barnabas Foundation’, which started as a way to solve the problem that started at the chairman’s church, has developed into a time to disclose and educate the missionary direction of the ‘Barnabas Foundation’ to the Christian community in the metropolitan area. So, we changed the name again to ‘Training Seminar for the New Missionary Direction of the Barnabas Foundation!’ and after confirming the date for an appropriate date three months later, we recruited participants through publicity and received applications for the actual cost of the training. And for each direction, we gave the directors in charge of the lectures a month to prepare the lectures, and when the lecture notes were ready, we sent the contents to the secretary general for review and adjustment, and then we actually trained ourselves first and gave lectures, and the instructors participated as instructors and the rest participated as trainees during the time I was not teaching, so we decided to proceed with the idea of first understanding this and simultaneously checking the lecturer’s lecture content and teaching techniques from both the instructor’s and the trainee’s perspectives. Later, we saw that these preparations were effective and gave the participants many challenges, and as a result, it was an opportunity to bear good fruit that the ‘Barnabas Foundation’ wanted to achieve. Finally, the ‘Barnabas Foundation’ family members participated in the ‘training seminar for the new missionary direction of the small ‘Barnabas Foundation’!’ First, we started from the situation each church was in and proceeded with all the progress as if it were real, and finally, after arriving at the prayer center, we opened our hearts through the praise team’s praise, and then had the lecturers of each part present a new direction for missions and discuss how it would affect the fruits of missions, and then we had time to present the results and evaluate them. First of all, this training seminar, which was conducted in a completely different direction from the previous seminars or meetings, was a great help to our family in gaining a new understanding of the future direction of missions and changing their thinking, and even the family members felt rewarded. Then, only the directors and the staff of the foundation gathered again to readjust the overall direction of the lectures, discussions, and evaluations, and we adjusted the parts that needed additional adjustments again and confirmed the corrections with the secretary general.
Through this process of preparing for the event, I was initially worried that I had done too much, but when the application period came, the applicants came in and the large auditorium of the prayer center that we had prepared as the venue was filled with applicants due to the unexpectedly good response. This was an opportunity to feel how frustrated our Korean church had been about the direction of missions, and because the staff preparing this training seminar lacked the hands, we had no choice but to borrow the hands of the prayer center staff to prepare. After all the preparations were completed, the actual “Training Seminar for the New Direction of Missions for the ‘Barnabas Foundation’!” finally began. First, there was a lot of confusion as the participants came to the prayer center from each region after finishing the Sunday service. Even though the process of controlling the influx of vehicles and parking, registering, and assigning seats was made as simple as possible, it was crowded because so many participants gathered in such a short period of time. So, those who arrived first were organized into groups and assigned from the front, and when the appointed time came, the “Training Seminar for the New Direction of Missions for the ‘Barnabas Foundation’!” began with an opening service and proceeded. Some of the latecomers were given a simple registration and assigned to the back seats to attend. However, fortunately, there was no major traffic disruption from the metropolitan area at this time, so all the participants arrived within an hour after the program started, and we were finally able to focus more on the program. The program progressed as we had already thoroughly prepared through the training seminar in advance, so all the lecturers' lectures ended with a great challenge to the participants in the grace of the Lord, and finally it was my lecture time for the last time.
"Hello, everyone.
Thank you very much for coming from far and near after today's Sunday service
and participating in the training seminar so far.
When I first prepared for this,
I was worried that the work we had prepared might have been too far ahead of its time.
However, when I saw the response from your applications,
I thought,
Oh! Well done!
I read that each church is sending a message that they cannot do mission work in the current reality of the Korean church,
but it is also difficult to continue to stay in the same way as they are now.
So, I thought that the new direction of missions promoted by our ‘Barnabas Foundation’ could have a positive effect.
However, that does not mean that our ‘Barnabas Foundation’ presents all or the ultimate direction of missions.
We challenge each church to improve the realistic methods of missions currently being carried out,
so that the Korean church that promotes and supports missions can see the actual rewards and fruits,
and also receive the influence, so that the church can grow,
and use the capabilities of the church members as an opportunity and opportunity to focus on the missions, which is God’s work in the world,
and to promote realistic mission plans for this purpose,
so that missionaries can have a solid contact point for missions,
and the Korean church can have the rewards of missions accordingly.
And although the start was launched under the missionary society of a denomination,
we will actually raise funds beyond denominations and sects,
and support missionaries,
and support the entire ministry with the purpose sponsorship,
and notify the missionary sites or missionaries designated by the sponsors or organizations who want to support missionaries according to the missionary methods of our ‘Barnabas Foundation’ that this project is being carried out according to the missionary methods of the ‘Barnabas Foundation’,
and we will objectively guide the ministry between the donors or churches and the missionary sites or missionaries,
and proceed everything legally through contracts.
Our ‘Barnabas Foundation’
While I was doing missionary work in ‘Molisha’ for the past 33 years,
I was initially sent to the field and worked there, and as I became a senior missionary, or so-called veteran missionary,
Based on what I experienced in the field,
I realized that a new paradigm of mission was needed,
As you all know,
I was exposed too much in my mission field, ‘Molisha’,
So I thought it would be difficult to continue my work there,
So I quietly delegated the work to my successor, my son, and
After returning to Korea, I explained to our chairman about
This ‘Barnabas Foundation’
And what this foundation would do in the future,
And I received support and created the foundation,
And I started this work with the support of the directors,
And I hope that everyone who wants to participate as a director can participate in this work in the future,
And the denomination can also participate.
We have made it public.
We do not interfere in the work of each denomination at all.
However, we will discuss with the denomination regarding the missionary work designated by the denomination through us,
and try to realize the value of our ‘Barnabas Foundation’ in the mission field,
so that the missionaries’ ministry will be successful in many ways and bear more certain fruits.
And in the case of a project that does not provide support without designation,
or does not provide full support,
when the funds raised through fundraising are collected and the cost of the project that our foundation wants to promote is implemented,
we will announce it to missionaries around the world,
with a limited scope, and receive applications for support.
And among them, we will select two or three candidate sites or candidate missionaries,
and after discussing and adjusting from various angles,
we will sign a contract according to the conditions set,
and support the mission site or missionary,
so that the ministry can proceed as planned.
In fact, you are currently participating in this training seminar,
but the church where our ‘Barnabas Foundation’ president is currently pastoring
is preparing to send out a new missionary.
So the president tried to send missionaries through the ‘Barnabas Foundation’
and realize the values that our foundation dreams of
but the church members and church officials
still do not understand this part,
so I tried to make them understand first
and suggest a new direction,
but the matter has grown so much that
many people are attending this training seminar today.
While I was working in the field of ministry,
I thought that other missionary values and ideals set for missions
were all good.
However, when moving toward them,
I thought that there were some problems in the realistic method,
so I would like to suggest a new method.
First, regarding the dispatch,
So far, the sending church has been sending missionaries by supporting a certain amount of money every month,
and strictly speaking, this is the missionary's living expenses,
but in most cases, the amount of support provided every month is not greatly related to the price level of the country,
and is provided according to the thoughts or circumstances of the sending church,
and the missionary decides whether to use the support for living expenses or to invest in missionary work,
but in most cases, it is also often spent as insufficient missionary expenses.
This is because there is also the realistic aspect of having to show God how one's ministry is doing?
and to the sending church, other missionaries,
or to someone else who will create new support.
So, I would like to make a sudden proposal to the sending churches.
First, depending on the church's circumstances,
how much do you want to support monthly as dispatch expenses?
and how long do you guarantee? Considering the above,
we will receive a loan of about 70~80% from the church,
and provide support in a lump sum through the 'Barnabas Foundation',
and we at the 'Barnabas Foundation' will guide and supervise so that it can be used for the intended purpose,
or for creative projects that take into account the situation in the mission field,
and register it with the missionary and the sending church (senior pastor),
and the 'Barnabas Foundation',
and provide support for the remaining 20~30% of the amount every month,
so that the relationship with the missionary can be maintained legally and emotionally,
and after that, according to the policy, after a certain period of time,
the property rights will be transferred entirely to the missionary's name.
I think that sending missionaries in this way will not only be a method and opportunity for the missionary to do powerful work in the mission field,
but also have the effect of solving secondary problems.
Next, there are many missionaries in various parts of the world at present. There are currently about 260 countries in the world,
and the number of Korean missionaries is said to be about 27,000,
so on average, it is understood that about 100 missionaries are dispatched to each country.
However, on the other hand, Korean churches that should support them
are increasingly having difficulty supporting them due to various circumstances in Korea,
and are increasingly urging missionaries to become independent quickly.
How great would it be if they could do their work while receiving support?
However, considering the latter case,
how can missionaries become independent?
So, in order to solve this problem,
we consider the following most effective methods.
First, there are various special products in various parts of the world that show the characteristics and effects of direct translation. So, if missionaries who know these local characteristics well support the specialty product network of the Barnabas Foundation,
a line that can connect world-famous products
will be formed,
and if these households that can send them to each other, sometimes through the headquarters and sometimes directly,
are opened in each country,
there will be various special products from all over the world,
so this household will probably become a special household in that region.
And if missions create such work in the early stages and move through local staff,
these things can proceed without much effort.
And 50% of the profits from here will be returned to the headquarters,
and more can be raised domestically,
so that these things can continue to be opened in other countries or regions.
If that happens, not only will the problem of working visas, which is a problem for most countries and missionaries, be solved, but also a significant portion of the ministry expenses will be covered by the missionaries themselves.
And not only that,
we will connect this distribution to domestic churches,
and open these households within churches that support missions,
and after doing ministry,
we will use 50% of the profits to help the church surroundings and evangelize,
and return 50% to the headquarters to help the mission field and the missionaries' ministry.
As these things become more active,
the mission field will become stronger one by one,
and the ministry that follows will be able to bear more and more effective fruits.
These are just a few examples of things that can be done. Now we need to open our eyes,
and remove the cobwebs that are blocking our eyes,
and open our hearts more actively and
positively to the problems presented in reality.
So today, I would like to ask all of you who participated in this “‘Barnabas Foundation’ New Mission Direction Training Seminar!”
to actively participate in this work that our foundation is trying to do as directors or members,
and join us,
and you will be standing in the work of laying a great foundation for missions,
and furthermore, I hope that your church will use this method to make the realistic problems of missions more concrete,
and bear more certain fruits of missions.
We will have a brief discussion in each group about this part,
and share other good ideas,
and report the results,
and evaluate together which ones will be effective.”
Then, the participants discussed in groups and shared many opinions, either positive or negative, and when the group leader made a presentation, all participants judged whether it was effective or not, and it was a time for all participants to take interest in the reality of actual missions and consider it. And when the time came, they finished the final touches.
“Thank you for participating until late and
for thinking together.
Through this opportunity,
I hope you will think about missions from various angles once more,
and remember that we, the ‘Barnabas Foundation,’ are a foundation that actually participates in and realizes those things,
and please participate with us and
also utilize it.
Thank you.”
With this, all programs ended with the last program of the “Training Seminar for the New Direction of Missions of the ‘Barnabas Foundation’!” Some pastors and Christian businessmen applied for registration as directors. In addition, many of the participants registered as general supporters. While preparing a program for the church members of the chairman’s church, I felt like God was helping me after finishing this valuable training seminar.
Two weeks after the “Training Seminar for the New Missionary Direction of the ‘Barnabas Foundation’!” the chairman asked me to preach the sermon for the next Sunday service, saying that the church members wanted to meet. Then he asked me to meet with the church members. So the following Sunday morning, I visited the church where the chairman was pastoring and preached a sermon titled “The Door of Mission.”
“Dear congregation members!
Since God has commanded us to preach the gospel,
it is natural for us to do mission work.
However, depending on who opens that door of mission, how, and for what purpose,
the results will be very different.
The most important thing in opening that door is to follow the Lord’s will and open that door.
Today, missionaries are trying to open that door in various ways,
and if you look closely, it seems that the churches that send missionaries from Korea and those who support them decide half of the types of doors.
However, I think that the missionaries in the field should think about which door to open,
and the sending churches and supporters should help them open it.
Therefore, we in Korea should also think seriously about this issue.
The important thing is to achieve the ultimate goal,
so let’s become those who work hard for that.”
After the sermon, I asked the church members about their thoughts on the “‘Barnabas Foundation’ New Mission Direction Training Seminar!” and they said that it opened their eyes to new ways of mission and asked how we should prepare the method for sending the missionaries we are preparing. So, I suggested that we call the missionary candidates to be sent and discuss it together. All the church members agreed and called the missionaries to be sent. Then, the senior pastor of the church checked with the chairman to see if I could explain it to them, and then first confirmed a few things. “First, I asked how much the monthly missionary sending support fee would be for this church, and the church said it was set at 1.5 million won. Then I asked how many years they would guarantee for the missionary sending period, and they said they hadn’t thought about that yet, so I said that sending a missionary would mean that the missionary would have to return, and since there were practical issues, it would be better to first decide on the number of years guaranteed. Then, considering the church’s situation and the age of the missionary being sent, they said that they would first agree on 20 years and that the church would decide again after that depending on the situation at that time. So I explained the method of sending. Then, first, 20 years + 2 years, guaranteeing 22 years, but when a missionary is sent to the local area, the entire amount of 1.5 million won is supported for 2 years, and during those 2 years, the missionary masters the language of the country at the 6th grade level, and during that time, during holidays, he/she visits all tourist attractions, famous places, and on the contrary, shady places in the local area, etc., and after 2 years, a report is written with the results of the training so far, including the situation in the country, 5 types of ministry to be done in the future, and the budget details necessary to carry out those, and based on that, the church council decides which ministry would be good to do while looking at the local area and considering the circumstances and conditions of the church, and then the church directly remits 300,000 won, which is 20% of the 1.5 million won dispatch fee, to the missionary every month as dispatch fee, and 80%, 288 million won, 38 million won is deducted from the bank as interest, and the church pays the remaining interest, and the church borrows 250 million won from the bank. For the mission project that was to be carried out with a loan, the registration was made under the joint name of three parties: the church (the senior pastor as representative), the missionary, and the “Barnabas Foundation,” and after 10 years, the registration would be changed to the missionary’s name alone. In addition, a contract was prepared in which the “Barnabas Foundation” would not only guide the missionary but also handle all legal administrative processing between the missionary and the church. The three parties signed it. Also, within the church, these matters were recorded in the church minutes and all church members signed and requested copies. In this way, the missionary dispatch from the chairman’s church was finally finalized, and it was decided to have a two-year local adaptation period through a dispatch service and that all actions would be carried out after two years.
