For present day humans, it is difficult to conceive of counting without numbers, but there was a time when written numbers did not exist. For early man, primitive languages evolved to show the difference between "one," "two," and "many," but didn't have terms for higher numbers. It was this need to express larger numbers that resulted in the development of early systems of counting.
The first method of counting was done employing fingers. However, as the need to represent larger numbers grew- to count sheep and to keep track of property and the passage of time- early man employed readily available materials for the purpose. Small stones of pebbles were used to represent larger numbers. Each stone represented one object- such as a sheep. A small stone might be placed in a pile for each sheep as it is sent out to graze in the morning, and then a stone could be removed from the pile again for each sheep brought in at night. Hence, it's no surprise that the word "calculate" comes from the Latin word for pebble; calculus.
Other objects used to represent numbers were bones with notches recorded in certain patterns to represent numbers. The Ishango bone from Zaire, which is between 6000 and 9000 years old, contains notches carved into groups in an almost random manner at first sight, but on closer scrutiny, the bone reveals certain numerical patterns. Perhaps even more impressive, a 30000-year-old wolf bone found in the former Czechoslovakia revealed 57 notches in groups of five, indicating a possible usage of a base five number system. This was an early example of man's perceptive ability to look at a group of five objects and immediately reconginze it- five coincides with the number of digits on one human hand.
Although these methods of counting signaled great advances, they were limited in terms of sharing information among many people of tribes. Therefore, people began to develop written numbers to share numeral information, the first step towards modern numerical systems.
