앉으세요!” 지난 19일 열렬한 기립박수의 여운이 다 가시기 전에 로라 부시(54)는 전직 사서(司書)다운 차분한 목소리로 말했다. 대개 미국 대통령 취임 전날의 행사는 새 퍼스트 레이디를 위한 자리다. 그러나 독서광인 로라는 미국 작가들을 초청해 그들에게 각광을 돌렸다. 그녀는 작가들과 함께 무대에 앉으려 하지도 않았다. 서스펜스 작가 메리 히긴스 클라크를 소개하면서 로라는 소설속 캐릭터들에 대해 “위협적인 상황에 휘말린다”고 설명했다. 그녀는 청중들에게 미소를 띠며 “그들의 입장을 이해할 수 있다”고 말했다.

바로 몇시간 전 로라는 정치적으로 위협적인 사안 중 하나인 낙태 문제에 휘말렸었다. 그녀는 NBC-TV ‘투데이쇼’에 출연, 낙태를 합법화한 ‘로 對 웨이드’ 재판에 관해 처음으로 공개적인 입장을 밝혔다. 로라는 진행자 캐티 쿠릭에게 “판결을 뒤집어서는 안된다고 생각한다”고 말했다. 방송사측은 그저 의견을 물었을 뿐이라고 말했다. 그러나 조지 W. 부시 대통령이 낙태 반대론자인 존 애슈크로프트를 법무장관으로 지명한 것에 대해 비난 여론이 일고 있는 상황과 공교롭게도 시기가 맞물렸다.

로라 부시의 실체는 무엇일까. 공개석상을 꺼리는 것일까, 아니면 ‘언론 플레이’에 능한 것일까. 그녀는 “상원의원으로 출마하는 일은 결코 없을 것”이라며 힐러리 클린턴과는 차별화된 이미지를 내세운다. 지난해 12월 로라는 촌스러운 격자무늬 보라색 스커트 정장을 입고 다과회 석상에 참석해 세련된 검은색 바지 정장을 입고 나온 힐러리와 극명한 대조를 보였다. 패션계는 그녀를 “현대 여성이라기보다는 아이젠하워 시대의 여성 같다”고 평했다.

그녀는 이미 지난 8년간 ‘힐러리랜드’로 알려진 백악관의 분위기를 바꾸고 있다. 공간의 크기가 곧 권력의 상징인 백악관에서 로라는 서관 집무실을 사용하지 않기로 했다. 그렇다고 해서 그녀가 동관에서 도스토예프스키나 읽으며 지내지는 않을 것이다. 그녀는 쿠릭에게 “교육 정책에 참여하겠다”고 말했다. 선거운동 기간에는 종종 남편의 연설문을 살폈고 신문에서 남편을 형편없이 묘사한 기사들을 보고 화를 내기도 했다.

친구들은 로라가 정리정돈을 잘해 옷장도 듀이 10진 분류법에 따라 정리돼 있을 것이라고 농담했다. 그녀는 언제, 어디서 입은 옷인지 공식적인 자리에서 입는 옷들에 꼬리표를 달아 놓는다. 그러나 격식 차리는 것을 좋아하지는 않는다. 그녀가 가장 좋아하는 옷은 청바지다. 부시는 최근 “로라는 내가 잘난 체할 수 없게 만든다”고 농담했다. 지난주 취임전 행사에서 로라는 자신의 소개는 간략히 하고 책의 중요성에 대해 역설한 남편에게 고마워 했다. 그녀는 아이들에게 겉표지만 보고는 판단할 수 없다고 말하곤 한다. 마찬가지로 촌스러운 패션 감각만 보고 로라 부시를 평가할 수는 없을 것이다.

Jan. 29 issue ? “Have a seat!” Laura Bush said in her best librarian’s voice when the standing ovation lingered last Friday. Normally a pre-Inaugural event honors the new First Lady, but the bookish 54-year-old, whose Secret Service code name in the campaign was “Teacher,” had decided to deflect the attention to American authors.


SHE DIDN’T EVEN WANT to sit onstage with them. Introducing suspense writer Mary Higgins Clark, Bush explained that the author’s characters are “plunged into menacing situations.” Smiling at the audience, she said, “I can identify with that.”
Hours earlier Mrs. Bush had plunged into one of politics’ more menacing issues: abortion. On the “Today” show, she explained her position on Roe v. Wade publicly for the first time. “I don’t think it should be overturned,” Bush told Katie Couric. Mrs. Bush’s aides insist that Couric “pressed” the new First Lady into answering. They say that there was no ulterior motive for discussing her views now, though she hadn’t done so before. But the timing looked staged, coming amid the assault on abortion foe John Ashcroft, her husband’s pick for attorney general. The conciliatory comment “was to reassure women,” a Bush-family friend said. Which is the real Laura Bush: reluctant public figure or savvy media player? She paints herself as the Un-Hillary; “I’ll never run for Senate,” she’s said. And she offered a study in contrasts last month when she showed up in a dowdy, purple plaid skirt-suit for tea with Mrs. Clinton, who wore a chic black pantsuit. The fashion police called Bush “more Mamie Eisenhower than modern woman.”
SURRENDERED TURF
And she’s already changing the tone in what’s been known as Hillaryland for eight years. At the White House, where real estate is power, Laura Bush has surrendered some of Clinton’s turf?the ex-First Lady’s West Wing office.
But for all the outward trappings of tradition, Bush won’t just be curled up in the East Wing reading her beloved Dostoevsky. “I’ll get involved in education policy,” she told Couric. In Texas, Laura pushed for early-learning programs. During the campaign, she often read George W’s speeches for tone and wording. It was her idea for him to circumvent the press corps and go on “Oprah.” She vetted the daily clips, getting heated over snarky portrayals of her husband, who imposed a virtual “blackout” on the family’s media consumption. “Can you believe this?” she’d exclaim, pointing out perceived slights to him. He’d tease her: “Bushie, you’ve penetrated the news blackout!”
She handles barbs about herself with more characteristic calm. When style columnists began writing about her sensible but staid “low vamp” pumps last month, she marveled at attacks on her shoes. Friends joke that Bush is so organized that even her closet is done according to the Dewey Decimal System. She sticks notes on each official outfit about when and where she wore it.
But Laura Bush is not uptight. Her favorite clothing: blue jeans. She’ll keep her husband grounded. “She keeps me humble,” Bush joked recently. At the authors’ tribute last week, she thanked her husband for his “very brief” introduction, then expounded on the influence of books. “The power of a book,” she explained, is most often “quiet.” As she used to tell her school kids, you can’t judge it by its cover?even if it’s purple plaid.
