Hexagram 3 : Water over Thunder(Zhun-Difficulty at the Beginning).
▣ The Great symbolism(Daxiang Zhuan) :
Clouds and thunder form Zhun.
Thus, the noble pweson plans and organizes stste affairs
(or sets macro-level strategy).
[Explanation]
The Great Symbolism:
The gathering of dark clouds accompanied by thunder is called Zhun.
By observing this hexagram, a noble person should unfold their statecraft and strategic vision
(to undertake grand tasks dutring the early stages of founding an enterprise).
[Commentary]
Dark rain clouds cover the sky and thunder rumbles,
yet the rain has not yet fallen to moisten the earth[Yun Lei-Clouds and Thunder].
During such a time, a noble person must build statecraft and strategic vision (Gyeong-ryun)
to manage the universe.
Statecraft means looking up at the sky to weave vertical threads and looking down
at the earth to weave horizontal threads―thoroughly refining oneself and preparing
for the day to execute management and governance.
Liu Xi, who studied etymology during the Later Han Dynasty, stated in the Shiming :
"'Jing'(Gyeong) refers to the warp threads running vertically when weaving vertically
when weaving cloth, and 'Lun'(Ryun) means that even threads have logic and order."
Zhixu also put forward a similar view.
"Just as clouds and thunder nurture vegetation, a noble person must realize that statecraft
is necessary to enlighren oneself and the people [renewing oneself and the people]."
Inexercising statecraft, one must let go of attachment to the past, present, and future,
gaining the freedom to navigate through time boundlessly.
Here, referring to Kan(坎,감 - ☵) as 'clouds' rather than 'rain' signifies an incomplete state.
A world where rain has not yet fallen is called Zhun; thus, a noble person must recognize
the need for strategic vision to salvage this ear of difficulty.
Zhu Xi also called the clouds a state of blockage in the era of Zhun,
explaining that since statecraft pertains to governance,
'Jing' means 'to guide' and 'Lun' means 'to order / regulate.'
Dasan also defined 'statecraft' as establishing great principles and laws
with brilliant logic and order to sustain all people.
The various theories regarding the great fundamentals and core principles are equally profound.
Clouds and thunder will eventually turn into rain, and statecraft will eventually save the world.
While strategic statecraft is an essential requirement for a ruler governing a nation
or a scholar-official managing a household, completing statecraft truly lies in adjusting
and assisting nature's order(Jaeseong Bosang).
You are indeed the great person destined to unravel the intricate threads of the wpprld.
