Employment discrimination against women is still rampant in Korea, with one out of 10 job advertisements violating the law regarding gender equality, according to a government inspection.
The Labor Ministry said yesterday that it gave a correction order or a warning to employers after it found 1,176 advertisements were clearly discriminatory against female jobseekers. The authorities monitored a total of 11,918 ads posted on 342 online job portals for a month, beginning on June 18. Companies that do not comply with the order could be fined up to 5 million won.
The ads contained either conditions deemed irrelevant to work performance, such as marriage status, appearance, height and other standards fundamentally differing between genders, the ministry said.
Around half of the violations involved corporate custom of preferring women for simple accounting or counseling positions, and men for production and sales positions. Less than 1 percent of the infringements were due to differing age limits for male and female applicants, or requirements that applicants be single women or ones who have certain external features.
In particular, small and mid-sized businesses with less than 100 workers accounted for nearly 94 percent of the discrimination, compared to a mere 0.6 percent of big-size companies with more than 1,000 workers, according to the survey.
The Labor Ministry said smaller firms tend to have a weaker understanding of the law against the recruitment discrimination, adding that it will beef up efforts to reform the biased corporate culture by distributing guidelines on standardized application materials and interviewing procedures.
