Today’s Meditation Column (October 15)
: Why We Must Always Pray and Never Lose Heart
<Today’s Scripture | Luke 18:1 (NIV)>
“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.”
<A Meditation by Oswald Chambers>
“The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, is the Gospel.”
There are times when our prayers seem to go unanswered. When circumstances do not change despite our prayers, and the burdens of life seem to grow heavier, it is easy to become discouraged. Yet Jesus teaches us to always pray and never give up. Prayer is not merely a means of obtaining what we want; it is an expression of our faith as we continue to trust God and look to Him in every circumstance.
What, then, enables us to keep praying without losing heart? It is Jesus Christ, who bore the cross for us. As Oswald Chambers reminds us, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world is the very heart of the Gospel. Jesus took upon Himself our sins and reconciled us to God. First John 2:2 testifies that Jesus Christ is the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
The cross is the sure evidence of how deeply God loves us. Therefore, even when answers to our prayers seem delayed, we do not need to doubt His love. We may think that an answered prayer means only an immediate change in our circumstances. Yet sometimes God changes our hearts before He changes our circumstances, allowing our faith to grow through the waiting.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, the power of prayer does not depend merely on how long we pray. It rests on trusting and depending on Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins and intercedes for us before God. Do not lose heart when answers seem delayed. Hold firmly to the love revealed at the cross, and return to the place of prayer.
Because the Lamb of God gave Himself for us, we have a sure hope—and that hope enables us to rise again in prayer.
