Jesus describes Nathanael as “truly an Israelite, in whom there is no deceit.” The word “truly” is used when speaking of truth. A true Israelite is someone who aligns with God’s covenant. Saying there is no deceit means there is no fraud, trickery, or denial, and that the person’s heart is pure.
And Nathanael responded, “You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel!” Therefore, we should not be ashamed or hesitant to share the gospel with others. Likewise, we should not feel embarrassed about attending church or about our identity in faith.
And Jesus said, “You will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” This means that Nathanael will witness that Jesus is truly the Son of God. He will see it with his own eyes. Soon, Jesus will return—heaven will open, Jesus will descend, and the armies of angels and the holy people of God will come down as well.
