War Crimes Advocate Pillay Wins Nobel Peace Prize
Award reflects indirect criticism of Trump's rejection of international law
| By Choi Ha-yeon Published 2026.10.09. 18:05 The Chosun Daily Newspaper / 조선일보 South African international law expert Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, 85, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, was selected as this year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Pillay as the laureate on the 9th, evaluating her as "a leading guardian of international law in our time." It further stated that the selection was based on her "significant role in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide are held accountable." Pillay reportedly learned of the award while visiting Germany to attend the 80th-anniversary commemoration of the Nuremberg Trials. In a video posted on social media by Agnès Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International, Pillay asked colleagues around her, "Is this true?" and added, "I thought it was a joke." She continued, "As a lawyer and judge, I want to verify if this is factual." As her colleagues applauded, she joked, "If you clap a bit more, I might have to share this award with Trump." This remark was interpreted as a jab at U.S. President Donald Trump, who has openly expressed his desire for the Nobel Peace Prize. ◇ Mandela’s lawyer in the fight against racial discrimination… Also led the establishment of the UN North Korea human rights investigation committee Pillay was born in 1941 in a Tamil family of Indian origin in Durban, South Africa. During the apartheid era (racial discrimination policy), she worked as a lawyer defending activists who opposed racial discrimination, including Nelson Mandela. She later served as a judge in the South African High Court, a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), and a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC), before assuming the role of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014 during the tenure of former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Former Secretary-General Ban directly appointed Pillay to the position. During her tenure as a judge at the ICTR, she contributed to establishing the legal principle that rape and sexual violence constitute crimes against humanity and can form part of genocide. Until recently, she chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, concluding in September last year that Israel’s military actions in the Gaza Strip amounted to genocide. She is currently serving as a judge in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) case addressing allegations of genocide in Myanmar. During her time as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, she actively spoke out on the issues of Japanese military "comfort women" and North Korean human rights. In 2014, she became the first UN High Commissioner to issue a statement strongly criticizing the Japanese government regarding the comfort women issue and also led the establishment of the UN Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in North Korea. During a visit to South Korea in 2017 to attend an international academic conference on preserving records related to Japanese military comfort women, she stated, "The comfort women and North Korean human rights issues are matters of human dignity before they are political or diplomatic issues," adding, "South Korea should take the lead in resolving human rights issues for North Korean residents and defectors." Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission (EC), posted on social media, "Pillay has never turned away from confronting the brutality of injustice," calling her "a guardian of the persecuted, the vulnerable, and those without a voice." Some interpreted Pillay’s selection as an indirect criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump. In an early 2026 interview with *The New York Times*, Trump stated, "I don’t need international law." In July, the Trump administration also claimed that the ICC, which adjudicates crimes against humanity, is "waging war against the United States" and mentioned its dissolution. The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held annually on December 10th, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, in Oslo, the capital of Norway. · This article has been translated by Upstage Solar AI. |
