<오늘의 말씀>
<핵심 문장>
Today's Meditation (October 16)
: Prayer Is the Key to Missions
<Today's Scripture>
“And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?” Luke 18:7 (NIV)
“Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
— Matthew 9:38 (NIV)
<Today's Meditation>
We often consider many ways to bear fruit in missions. We seek to help people through medicine and education, and we organize various programs and evangelistic activities to share the gospel. These efforts are valuable and necessary. Yet Oswald Chambers emphasizes that the key to the missionary problem is not medicine, education, or even evangelistic activity itself. The key is prayer.
Why is prayer so important? Because missions is not accomplished by human knowledge and enthusiasm alone. It is God's work, carried out according to His will and through His power. God moves people's hearts, opens doors that seem closed, and calls workers to proclaim the gospel. Therefore, our first response should not be to rely on our own plans, but to kneel before God in prayer.
In Luke 18, Jesus assures us that God does not ignore the cries of His chosen people who call upon Him day and night. This is the Lord's encouragement to persevere in prayer and not lose heart. Sometimes the answers we seek do not come immediately. Yet the absence of visible results does not mean that God is inactive. We may not understand His timing or His ways, but we can continue to pray, trusting in His faithfulness.
Jesus also tells His disciples that the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. His instruction is clear: they must first ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers into His field. Notice that Jesus directs His disciples to pray before focusing on the work itself. Missions must begin with prayer that seeks the heart and will of God, rather than with human enthusiasm alone.
The same principle applies to us today. We must pray for the salvation of our families and neighbors, for people who have not yet heard the gospel, and for missionaries and evangelists who proclaim Christ. We must not depend solely on our abilities or methods for the growth of our churches and ministries. Through prayer, we seek God's will and learn to follow the people He sends and the paths He opens.
Prayer does not replace missionary work; rather, it connects us to God so that our missionary work may be carried out according to His will and power. We must not separate prayer from service. A praying church proclaims the gospel. A praying believer serves those around them. A praying missionary faithfully fulfills the calling God has entrusted to them.
So do not lose heart today because of the difficulties you see before you. Faithfully do what God has entrusted to you, but leave the results in His hands. The God who hears the prayers of His people will accomplish His purposes, send workers into His harvest, and open doors for the gospel.
<Key Sentence:>
The fruit of missions does not ultimately depend on human ability or enthusiasm; it begins with faith that continually seeks God's will through prayer.
<Today's Prayer and Commitment>
Heavenly Father, forgive me for trying to accomplish Your work through my own strength and methods. Even when visible results are slow to come, help me persevere in prayer for the salvation of my family and neighbors and for the spread of the gospel. Lord of the harvest, send the workers who are needed, and make me and our church willing to obey whenever You call. Unite our prayers with our service, and help us trust that You are the One who brings forth the fruit. In Jesus' name, Amen.
