"He must increase, but I must decrease."
John the Baptist said this—and as a result, he was captured and killed. When Jesus increases, we must decrease. This applies to pastors, elders, deacons, and all who hold leadership positions in the church. When we take on these roles, we must decrease.
The meaning of decreasing does not imply abandoning everything or leaving for somewhere, nor does it mean disregarding the authority of the Word or treating all teachings equally. Authority remains, yet we must decrease.
This means that when we stand before Jesus, we must humble ourselves even more. Even when we teach the Word with authority or are served by others, our fundamental attitude should be one of deeper humility.
This kind of faith is only possible when we are spiritually awake.
