Article 239. 自謙(자겸)은 비록 재능과 덕이 있다하더라도 스스로 남의 윗자리에 오르려하지 않는다.  Self- Humility(自謙,자겸- Jagyeom)means that even if one possesses talent and virtue,  one does ant willfully attempt to elevate oneself above others. 뭇사람들은 미미한 재능과 박한 덕이 있으면서도 이를 스스로 얼굴빛으로 나타내며 부추키어 밝히면서 오로지 스스로의 재능과 덕이짧은 시각에 우주의 이치에 관통하지 못하는 것을 두려워 한다.  While ordinary people show off their meager talent and thin virtue through their countenances   and boastfully expose them,  a person of self-humility fears only that their own brief lifespan   of talent and virtue might fall to penetrate the profound principles of the universe. 그러나 재능이 굳건한 사람은 물에 잠긴 것 같은 상황에도 허우적거리지 않고  덕이 굳건한 사람은 뜨거운 상황에도 덥지 않다.  Therefore, a person whose talent is steadfast does not flounder even in a situation akin    to being submerged in wather, and aoerson whose virtue is steadfast does not feel    the heat even in a scorching situation.  [ Original Text, 원문] 自謙者는 雖有才德이니 不自長也라 (자겸자는 수유재덕이니 부자장야라)   One who practicess self-humility(自謙,자겸), even though they possess talent and virtue,   does notwillfully elevate or boast of themselves. 衆人은 有微才薄德하여 (중인은 유미재박덕하여)  Ordinary people, possessing only meager talent and thin virtue, 自色焉하며 唆楊焉하며 (자색언하며 사양언하며)  display it through their countenances and boastfully instigate its display, 惟恐單晷가 不撤宇內로대 (유공단구가 불철우내로대)  fearing only that their brief lifespan(a singls sundial′s shadow) might fail   to penetrate the inier secrets of the universe. 健者之才는 潜而不泳하며 (건자지재는 잠이불영하며)  The talent of a ssteadfast, strong person remains submerged,   yet they do not struggle or flounder, 健者之德은 熱而不炎이니라. (건자지덕은 열이불화이니라.)  and the virtue of a steadfast, strong person encounters scorching heat,   yet they do not burn or feel oppressed by it.   ※  Key Notes.      ● 自謙(자겸) : Self-Humility / Inner Modesty (여기서 '自(스스로 자)'는 자신을, '謙(겸손할 겸)'은 겸양을 뜻하여,                            남이 알아주기를 바라기 전에 스스로를 낮추는 고결한 덕목을 의미합니다.)      ● 남의 윗자리를 오르려하지 않는다 : Does not willfully attempt to elevate oneself above others                         (타인 위에 군림하거나 권위를 세우려 하지 않는다는 뜻입니다.)      ● 미미한 재능 과 박한 덕 : Meager talent and thin virtue(얕은 지식이나 보잘것없는 도덕성을 비유합니다.)      ● 우주의 이치에 관통하지 못하는 것을 두려워 한다 : Fears that they might fail to penetrate the profound                               principles of the universe( 현자는 세상 사람들에게 부귀나 재능을 인정받는 것보다,                      우주의 영원한 진리나 天道(천도)를 온전히 깨닫지 못하는 것을 휠씬 더 중대하게 여김다는 뜻입니다.)      ● 물에 잠긴 것 같은 상황... 뜨거운 상황... :  역경이나 곤궁한 처지(물) 혹은 유혹이나 분노, 격동의 상황(불)등                       그 어떠 가혹한 환경 속에서도 본연의 중심을 잃지 않고 흔들림 없이 如如(여여)하다는                      현자의 단단한 경지를 비유적으로 표현한 멋진 문장입니다.      ● 不自長(부자장) : Not exalting oneself / Not making oneself out to be great                      (스스로를 우두머리로 세우거나 잘났다고 자랑하지 않는다는 뜻.)      ● 衆人(중인) : Ordinary people / The masses(깨닫지 못한 일반 중생.)      ● 自色(자색) / 唆楊(사양) :          ■ 自色(자색) : 얼굴빛에 스스로 드러내다(Showing off via countenance).          ■ 唆楊(사양) : 부추기고 드날리다(Instigating and publicizing oneself boastfully).      ● 單晷(단구) : A single sundial′s trace / Abrief moment of time(인간의 짧은 수명이나                        찰나의 시단을 은유적으로 표현한 아름다운 단어입니다.)      ● 不撤宇內(불철우내) : Failing to penetrate the universe / Not reaching the profound cosmic principles                        (우주의 본질과 이치를 꿰뚫지 못함을 두려워하는 현자의 고결한 고뇌를 뜻합니다.)      ● 健者(건자) : A steadfast person / A person of robust inner strength                          (재능과 덕이 굳건하고 단단하게 다져진 성숙한 인간상.)      ● 潜而不泳(잠이불영) / 熱而不炎(열이불화) : 물에 잠겨도 허우적거리지 않고(泳,영은 여기서는 평화로운 수영이                           아니라 물에서 헤매며 허우적거림을 의미), 불속에 있어도 타오르거나 뜨거워하지 않는다는 뜻으로,                           그 어떤 역경이나 유혹, 격공의 환견에서도 내면의 평정심을 유지하는 경지를 뜻하는 핵심 대꾸입니다)
