The key point of today’s passage is that Jesus asked this man, “Do you want to get well?” He specifically asked the man who had been sick for 38 years whether he truly wanted to be healed.
However, there are people who, even after being bedridden their entire lives, have no real desire to be healed. Some do not wish for their lifelong inconveniences or handicaps to be resolved. Similarly, some claim to desire the fullness of the Holy Spirit, yet they neither pray nor take action. When confronted with whether they truly want to be filled with the Spirit, the answer often proves otherwise.
The man in this passage wanted to reach the pool but was physically unable to do so. Jesus resolved this impossibility for him.
The phrase “Do you want to get well?” carries great significance in the New Testament—it speaks of God’s will being fulfilled.
People often do not pray or take action toward their desires because they believe they can achieve things on their own. However, when we come to Jesus, we must approach Him with the heart that says, “I cannot do this on my own—please help me.”
God is the One who makes all things possible. Therefore, we must meet Jesus and listen to His words.
