Revelation 2:8~11 - To the Church in Smyrna, Tribulation/Persecution/Martyrdom, Receiving Only Praise from Jesus
Revelation 2:9 – I know your afflictions and your poverty - yet you are rich!
<Revelation> 2:9 - I know your afflictions and your poverty--yet you are rich! I know the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.(NIV); I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.(KJV); "I know about your suffering and your poverty - but you are rich! I know the blasphemy of those opposing you. They say they are Jews, but they are not, because their synagogue belongs to Satan.(New Living Translation)
○ In particular, since Smyrna became the center of the Emperor Worship (or Imperial Cult), the church was subjected to greater suffering (or tribulation) and persecution. Because of their refusal to the Emperor Worship, they were accused of being the anti-state institution (or agent), as a result, they were suffering economic blows and ending up in extreme poverty.
○ In the eyes of human, the Church in Smyrna suffered tribulation and poverty, but in the eyes of Jesus, they are rich. Christ knows the tribulation and poverty that the Church in Smyrna faced or would face. But those difficulties enriched their faith and transformed them into Christians of love and service.
○ They were poor in material but rich in faith, also they were holy men willing to give their lives to Jesus as martyrdom for the resurrection and the crown of life. In other words, although they were robbed of everything physically, they were not deprived of their spiritual riches, namely, faithful riches.
