Letters from faculty members who have taught you tend to provide information most relevant to you as a prospective law student and most helpful to readers of your application. Faculty members who have served as your advisors, research supervisors, or have taught you in more than one course are often good choices. Letters from employers who know you well can also provide helpful and relevant information for your law school application. |
TOEFL | : iBT – No minimum, but, hopefully 100. IELTS – No minimum, but, hopefully 7.5. Note: Vanderbilt Law does not have a minimum score requirement. In general, we look for a TOEFL score of at least 100 or IELTS score of 7.5. We also look at the breakdown for listening, speaking, writing and reading to ensure that all indicate a high level of English proficiency. However, a lower score in one area or overall does not automatically preclude an applicant from consideration for Vanderbilt's LLM program. Applicants whose test score(s) falls below the targets set forth above, should feel free to highlight any specific issues in the personal statement portion of their application they feel might strengthen their application in this regard, such as time spent in English language environments, work done in English, English language publications, etc. |

Decisions on individual applications are made as quickly as possible, although the time period from completion to decision can vary substantially from case to case. We are committed to providing a thorough evaluation to each application. The rolling selection process allows for extending the time frame of consideration so that each application receives the individual attention it deserves and so that we can make close comparisons of applications completed at different times. Application Checklist The following items must be submitted to complete your electronic application: 1. Application Form—Complete as instructed. 2. The LL.M. personal statement 3. Résumé/CV 4. Applicants to the Thesis Track program should also attach a legal writing sample. 5. LSAC LLM Credential Assembly Service (CAS) report —We require that all applicants register with LSAC for the LLM Credential Assembly Service at www.LSAC.org. Your LLM Credential Assembly Service report will include your TOEFL score(s), photocopies of your academic transcripts, a transcript analysis, and your letters of recommendation. 6. TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo Test report—If your native language is not English or the language of instruction at the foreign institution conferring your bachelor's degree was not English, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and have ETS send your scores directly to LSAC. We also accept the IELTS score report and the Duolingo English Test report. 7. Two letters of recommendation—Letters should be from people who have worked closely with you and who know you well.
