Discipleship Is Built on the Grace of God
Today's Scripture (Proverbs 4:2, NIV)
“I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching.” BibleGateway
3. Today's Meditation (English Version) / Discipleship Is Built on the Grace of God
As we walk in faith, we may sometimes find the life of a disciple difficult and burdensome. Reading the Bible, praying, obeying God's will, and faithfully fulfilling our responsibilities can sometimes feel repetitive and ordinary. When we experience special moments of grace, we may serve the Lord with joy. But when ordinary days follow one another, our hearts can grow weary and our spiritual passion can begin to fade.
Oswald Chambers reminds us of an important truth: We need God's grace even to live an ordinary, uneventful life as disciples of Jesus Christ.
Discipleship is not simply a process of gaining biblical knowledge or developing religious habits. It is a lifelong journey of allowing God's Word to take root in our hearts, obeying His teaching, and becoming more like Jesus each day. Therefore, spiritual growth does not depend on our determination and effort alone. It is by grace that we first believe, by grace that we continue in faith, and by grace that we follow the Lord to the end.
Proverbs 4:2 teaches us not to abandon God's instruction. It calls us not merely to know His Word but to remain in it and put it into practice in our daily lives. Yet even when we sincerely desire to obey God, we often stumble. We resolve to pray but neglect prayer. We promise to love others but struggle to accept those who disappoint us. These failures reveal our human weakness.
What, then, should we do? Instead of relying on our own determination, we must seek God's grace. Jude 1:20 says:
“But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit.” (NIV)
Building ourselves up in faith cannot be separated from prayer that seeks the help of the Holy Spirit. Through prayer, we acknowledge our weaknesses, hold firmly to God's Word, and learn to obey Him today through the strength the Holy Spirit provides.
Spiritual maturity does not always appear in extraordinary or dramatic ways. It is seen in faithfully fulfilling our responsibilities when no one notices, remaining committed to God's Word and prayer when everyday life feels monotonous, and choosing to love and forgive even when it is difficult. This is the life of a disciple being formed by God's grace.
We do not need God's grace only in extraordinary moments. We need it just as much to live an ordinary day faithfully before Him.
Today, do not depend on your own determination alone to follow Jesus. Hold firmly to His Word and seek the help of the Holy Spirit. More important than our ability to hold on to the Lord is the truth that His grace is holding on to us.
May we depend on His grace and continue to walk faithfully as disciples of Jesus, one ordinary day at a time.
Key Thought>
“We need God's grace even to live an ordinary day faithfully.”
<오늘의 결단 / Today's Commitment>
Today, I will depend not on my own determination but on God's grace, following Jesus through His Word and prayer.
