발람의 위로 The Comfort of Balaam

이때로부터 예수 그리스도께서 자기가 예루살렘에 올라가 장로들과 대제사장들과 서기관들에게 많은 고난을 받고 죽임을 당하고 제 삼일에 살아나야 할 것을 제자들에게 비로소 가르치시니 베드로가 예수를 붙들고 간하여 가로되 주여 그리 마옵소서. 이 일이 결코 주에게 미치지 아니 하리이다. 예수께서 돌이키시며 베드로에게 이르시되 사단아 내 뒤로 물러가라 너는 나를 넘어지게 하는 자로다 네가 하나님의 일을 생각지 아니하고 도리어 사람의 일을 생각 하는도다 하시고 이에 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 아무든지 나를 따라 오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 좇을 것이니라. 누구든지 제 목숨을 구원코자 하면 잃을 것이요 누구든지 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 찾으리라 사람이 만일 온 천하를 얻고도 제 목숨을 잃으면 무엇이 유익하리요 사람이 무엇을 주고 제 목숨을 바꾸겠느냐 인자가 아버지의 영광으로 그 천사들과 함께 오리니 그 때에 각 사람의 행한 대로 갚으리라 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 여기 섰는 사람 중에 죽기 전에 인자가 그 왕권을 가지고 오는 것을 볼 자들도 있느니라. 마태복음 16:21-28

From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You." But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's." Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? "For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and WILL THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS. "Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom." Matthew 16:21-28

오늘 말씀은 “이 때로부터”라는 표현으로 시작합니다. 이는 주님의 사역의 목적을 생각해 볼 때 이제 그 준비가 되었다는 의미입니다. 그리고 그것은 바로 직전에 이루어진 베드로와의 대화, 실은 제자들 모두와의 대화에서 비롯됩니다. 주께서 오신 목적은 그리스도와의 연합의 믿음을 심어주기 위한 것이었고 그것이 이루어졌음을 확인하신 것입니다. 그러므로 마땅히 주님의 고난과 그리스도와 연합의 믿음을 가진 제자들과 연관된 의미로 본문을 보아야 합니다.

그런데 바로 다음에 나온 베드로의 반응과 거기에 따른 주님의 언급은 이 말씀을 접하는 사람들에게 혼란을 주기에 충분합니다. 어쩌면 베드로는 이제 주를 그리스도로 인정하였고 그 믿음을 인정받은 상황이었으니 주께서 고난당하신다는 말씀에 대해 당연히 걱정하고 말리는 태도를 보여야 했을 것입니다. 자신이 나서서 지켜드리겠다는 의미도 담겨 있었을 것입니다. 하지만 주님의 반응을 전혀 의외였습니다.

“사단아 내 뒤로 물러가라 너는 나를 넘어지게 하는 자로다 네가 하나님의 일을 생각지 아니하고 도리어 사람의 일을 생각 하는도다.”

바로 직전에 고백을 한 베드로에게 하신 말씀이라고 믿기지 않을 정도의 표현입니다. 하나님께서는 그 백성을 위로하시고 이는 그리스도의 사역으로 나타나셨다고 알고 있습니다. 그런데 당시의 상황을 생각하여 본다면 이 후로 주님은 십자가 고난과 부활, 그리고 승천으로 이어지는 과정을 가십니다. 그리고 이 땅에는 오직 인생들을 남기시고 그 사역의 결과로 승리하라고 하시는 복음이 오늘 기독교의 근간입니다.

우리가 오늘날 우리에게 오셔서 우리와 연합하시는 그리스도와의 연합을 복음의 근간으로 삼는 이유가 바로 이것입니다. 오직 우리에게 오셔서 고와 낙을 함께 하시는 주님만이 우리에게 참된 위로가 되시기 때문입니다. 그렇게 보면 오늘의 이 말씀도 역시 오늘 우리 각자에게 오셔서 하나 되신 그리스도와의 연합의 관점으로 보아야 할 것입니다. 즉 제자들에게 자신을 누구라 하느냐 물으신 데서부터 베드로의 고백과 오늘의 상황까지가 실상 우리의 것입니다.

우리가 각자 자신의 인격에서 주와의 연합을 인정하게 되고 나면 주와 함께 십자가의 고난의 길을 갈 준비가 되었다는 것입니다. 즉 주님은 주님의 길을 가고 제자들은 남아서 그 결과만 받으면 되는 것이 아닙니다. 이 때의 주님은 오늘날 우리에게 오신 주님이시고 고난의 길에 나서는 것은 주와 더불어 하나 된 우리 각자의 믿음입니다. 그렇기에 그 뒤에 하신 말씀이 있어야 하는 것입니다.

“아무든지 나를 따라 오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 좇을 것이니라.”

우리는 베드로의 간언과 주님의 반응으로부터 발람선지자의 축복과 그 결말을 떠올리게 됩니다. 그는 오히려 이스라엘 백성을 향해 세 번이나 축복을 빌어 줍니다. 그래서 잘 모르고 성경을 보게 되면 왜 발람 선지가 그렇게 나쁜 사람으로 기록되었는지 의문을 가질 수도 있습니다. 그런데 그 축복의 제단에 우상에게 바쳐진 제물들을 그대로 방치하여 이스라엘 백성이 이를 먹고 하나님 앞에 벌을 받게 하였던 것이 기록에 남아 있습니다. 결국 발람은 르우벤 지파가 자신들의 땅을 회복할 때 그들의 칼에 죽임을 당합니다.

참 된 위로는 오직 그리스도께서 우리에게 오셔서 하나 되셨다는 사실뿐입니다. 그 외의 어떠한 위로의 말도 실상 헛되어 구름을 잡으려는 것과 같습니다.

Today's words begin with the expression‎ "From that time" This means that the preparation is now in view of the purpose of the Lord's ministry. And it comes from the conversation with Peter, which took place just before, with all of the disciples. The purpose of the Lord's coming was to instill the faith of the union with Christ, and He confirmed that it was achieved. Therefore, you should look at the text in a sense related to the Lord's hardships and the disciples to make the unification with Christ.

However, Peter's reaction and the Lord's comments that followed were sufficient to confuse those who encountered these words. Perhaps Peter should have been concerned and discouraged by the word that the Lord was suffering because he had now recognized the Lord as Christ and had accepted his belief. It might have meant that he would step up and protect it. But the Lord's reaction was completely unexpected.

"Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's."

It's an incredible expression‎ that you can't believe it was said to Peter, who confessed just before. I understand that God has comforted his people, and this has been revealed by Christ's ministry. However, the Lord has since gone through a process that leads to crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension, given the circumstances at the time. And today's Christianity is based on the gospel that tells us to leave only life on this earth and to prevail as a result of that ministry.

This is why the gospel is based on the union with Christ that comes to us today and unites with us. Because only the Lord, who comes to us and shares good and bad situations, is the true comfort to us. In that sense, today's words should also be viewed from the perspective of the union with Christ, who came to each of us today and became one. In other words, from asking the disciples who they called themselves, Peter's confession and today's situation are actually ours.

After we have each recognized the union with the Lord in our own personality, we are ready to go with the Lord on the path of crucifixion. In other words, the Lord does not go his way, and the disciples do not just need to remain and receive the results. The Lord at this time is the Lord who came to us today, and it is the faith of each of us who is united with the Lord to go on the path of hardship. That is why there must be a word after that.

"If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me."

From Peter's words and the Lord's response, we are reminded of the blessing of Prophet Balaam and its ending. He rather blesses the people of Israel three times. So, if you don't understand the Bible, you might wonder why Balaam was recorded as such a bad person. However, the record shows that the offerings to the idol were left untouched at the altar of blessing so that the people of Israel could eat them and be punished before God. When the Reuben tribes restore their lands, Balaam is eventually killed by their swords.

The only real comfort is that Christ came to us and united. Any other words of consolation are actually in vain and are trying to catch the clouds.
