정청래 더불어민주당 전 대표가 31일 김민석 대표 체제와 관련해 “100일 정도 되면 판가름이 날 것”이라며 “그 이후 제가 어떤 깃발을 들지 하나하나 생각하고 있다”고 했다. 최근 유시민씨가 이재명 대통령과 김 대표를 잇달아 비판하면서 여권 내부에서 논란이 벌어진 데 대해선 “독립운동하던 분들도 하나의 노선을 가지지 않았다”며 “이럴 때일수록 등을 토닥이면서 ‘우리 함께 가자’고 하는 것이 현명한 길”이라고 했다.

정 전 대표는 이날 친청계 유튜브 채널 ‘박시영TV’에 출연해 이같이 밝혔다. 정 전 대표는 지난 8월 17일 민주당 전당대회에서 김 대표와 경쟁했다가 패배했다.

정 전 대표는 김 대표가 취임 100일 안에 당 지지율을 10%포인트 올리겠다고 공언한 것과 관련해 “전당대회 이후 최소한의 예의는 지켜야겠다고 생각했다”며 “본인이 100일만 말미를 달라는 것으로 저는 이해했다”고 했다. 이어 “100일 정도 되면 판가름이 날 것이라고 본다. 성과, 지지율, 여러 가지 평 이런 것들이”라고 했다. 김 대표의 취임 100일은 다음 달 24일이다.

정 전 대표는 최근 유씨의 발언을 둘러싼 여권 내부 논란에 대해서도 입장을 밝혔다. 유씨는 지난 28일 같은 방송에 출연해 “윤석열 딱정벌레가 자기 집을 다 해체했는데, 지금 정부와 이재명 대통령도 똑같이 한다”고 했다. 이 대통령의 지지율 하락을 거론하면서 “극단적인 경우에는 박근혜나 윤석열처럼 임기를 채우지 못하기도 한다”고도 했다. 김 대표가 민주당 공식 유튜브 방송 ‘민티07’을 만든 데 대해서는 “당대표가 계속 진영을 박살 내는 일에 앞장서고 있다”고 비판했다.

이에 김 대표는 29일 당 공식 유튜브에서 “일일이 논평할 필요는 없는 것 같다”면서 “분열의 언어에 분열의 언어로 답하지 않고 문제를 키우지 않도록 절제하는 것이 필요하다”고 했다. 친명계 김영진 의원은 유씨 발언에 대해 “이 정도 하면 막 가자는 것”이라며 “같은 진영 내무반에 수류탄을 던져 계속 서로 내전을 벌이는 것”이라고 비판했다. 이건태 의원도 유씨를 향해 “독단의 도그마에 갇혀 있는 게 아닌가 싶다”고 했다.

정 전 대표는 이날 유씨 발언에 대한 질문을 받자 “유 작가님의 방송은 여러분께서 평가하시기 바란다”며 “저는 평가라기보다는 제 생각을 말씀드리겠다”고 했다. 이어 “독립운동하던 분들도 하나의 노선을 가지 않았다. 거기도 엄청난 파벌이 많았다”며 “독립운동처럼 민주주의를 위한 투쟁도 똑같다. 장기성, 간고성, 복잡성을 띠고 있다”고 했다.

정 전 대표는 “우리 내부에서도 이런저런 생각과 의견과 주장과 방법이 다 각자 다르다”며 “그랬을 때 리더십, 지도력이 중요하다. 민주당과 당원들, 그중에서도 저희 같은 직업적인 정치인들이 잘해야 한다”고 했다. 그러면서 “유 작가의 역할은 유 작가의 역할대로 하고, 박시영은 박시영대로 역할을 하고, 정청래는 정청래 역할을 하는 것”이라며 “지금은 다 힘들다. 이럴 때일수록 등을 토닥이면서 ‘우리 함께 가자’고 하는 것이 대단히 현명한 길”이라고 했다.

정 전 대표는 자신이 당대표 시절 추진했다가 무산된 조국혁신당과의 합당도 거듭 주장했다. 그는 “조국혁신당과는 수십 년을 함께 살고 3년간 헤어져 산 것”이라며 “같은 뿌리이고 같은 집안”이라고 했다. 이어 “개인적으로 내년 1월까지 맞춰야 한다고 생각한다”며 “빨리하면 할수록 좋고 늦어도 1월에는 마무리해야 한다”고 했다.

정 전 대표는 “총선 때 1~2%, 500표, 1000표를 가지고 당락을 결정한 데가 너무 많다”며 “우리 같은 편끼리 두 사람이 나가면 안 된다”고 했다. 2028년 총선과 당내 경선 일정 등을 고려하면 합당을 서둘러야 한다는 것이다. 합당 방식과 관련해서는 “그때 조건을 봐서 전당대회를 할 수도 있다”며 중앙위원회를 통한 약식 합당 가능성도 거론했다. 다만 양당 당원들의 찬성이 전제돼야 한다고 했다.

정 전 대표는 “요즘 당 지지율이 안 좋고 대통령 지지율이 많이 떨어지고 해서 위기의식을 많이 가지고 있다”며 일부 민주당 의원들이 자신에게 조국혁신당과 빨리 합당해야 한다는 의견을 전달하고 있다고 했다.

정 전 대표는 이 대통령의 국정 운영 기조가 바뀔 것으로 보느냐는 질문에는 “여러분들이 바라는 뜻을 알고 있기에 그렇게 될 수 있도록 제 역할을 하는 것”이라며 “어느 정도 성과가 있을지 모르겠지만 끊임없이 여러 경로를 통해 노력하고 있다”고 했다.
