#46 Communication skill is most
important quality for leaders or politicians.
Over the past few decades, many types of
leaders and politicians have emerged and made various contributions to our
society. So, it has been argued whether the most important quality for
leaders or politicians is communication skill. Some might believe that it is more crucial for leaders to have
great experiences and good personalities, while others might believe differently. However, I
am deeply convinced that communication skill is the number-one factor that all
good leaders and politicians must have. Actually, I have a couple of
reasons to support my assertion and will explain and develop them in the next
following paragraphs.
First of
all, communication skill is the most indispensible factor for leaders or politicians
to have because a good leader must be able to persuade
and interact with group members and citizens to lead them in the right direction.
Without any ability of communication, leaders and politicians
will never be able to cooperate with their followers, which will eventually
lead to a massive failure. Although some
people might say that it is more important for leaders and politicians to have
much experience than communication skill, it would be no use if very experienced leaders and politicians can’t share
their experiences and opinions with their own members and followers. To give an example of this, there are two very
important speeches made by two leaders of both the majority and minority of
American citizens. First, Franklin D.
Roosevelt spoke the famous quote, ‘there is
nothing to fear but fear itself’, which was a speech written after
communicating with the citizens of America. In the time of the great
depression, the majority of American citizens were going through a widespread
panic attack because all of the stock markets were broken and people were all
going towards poverty. In such economic crisis, President Roosevelt decided to
make many programs to communicate with the middle class and lower. Even though
the president himself never had any experience living as a normal middle-class
person, he was able to win elections and the respect of the people because of
his communication skills, and his communication had made
many people full of encouragement and hope. Not only this president, but also
Martin Luther King was one of the most famous leaders for his communication
with the citizens. Living in a racist community, Martin Luther King had communicated with segregated Negroes, and he had persuaded everyone with ideas about standing up
for their rights without any violence. Although many of the plans didn’t work
out safely, his speech ‘I have a dream’ had been
filled with the results of what he shared with the black community by
communication more than experience. Being born as a black man, he must’ve had
any common experience, but he was a good leader because he was able to make
decisions through communicating with others.
By this, we can clearly see that history itself proves that great leaders must
have communication skills to lead the members and followers to the right direction.
Moreover,
leaders and politicians must have fluent communication
skill in order to cooperate with other leaders and politicians of other
teams, states, and nations. Leaders and politicians
can be considered as a bridge between one society
and another. Without any communication skills,
leaders and politicians will not be able to effectively make peace or good decisions with other important leaders. Although some people might say it is most
essential for leaders to have good personalities, this is a myth that is often
proved false. For instance, I was surfing
on the Internet because of a school assignment
and came across a statistical data that was about many leaders of the world. It
was told that over half of the prestigious leaders that we respect and praise
today had very hurtful and dark childhoods that made their personalities very
stony and cold. Even the founder of the apple company, Steve Jobs, and the
founder of Disney animations, Walt Disney had very dark pasts, and some knew
them as cold and logical. However, all of the leaders that we know had enough
communication skills to cooperate with other teams and countries, and the good
results of cooperation had nothing to do with good
personalities. In the Cold war, America and Russia were a temporary
team. They both achieved their benefits, although America was a democratic
country and Russia was communist country. It is
hard to believe that the leaders of America and Russia were good at cooperating
and making good outcomes because of their good personalities. They did not cooperate with each other because they were
warm-hearted and they were best friends. They cooperated with each other
because each of their own benefits. Despite the differences the two
countries had, they were good at communicating with other countries. This shows that communication skill is the most
important factor for leaders and politicians to have.
