<오늘의 말씀>
Today's Devotional Column (October 22) / Yesan Sujeong Church
<Today's Scripture>
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” Matthew 5:8 (NIV)
<Today's Meditation : Lay Down Your Own Reasoning and Trust in the Lord>
We profess to believe in God, yet there are times when we trust our own thoughts and judgments more than we trust Him. We want to understand before we believe, to be convinced before we obey, and to see our own ideas align with God's will before we feel certain that He is with us. Yet this may be less an expression of trust in God and more a desire for God to approve of what we have already decided.
Oswald Chambers reminds us that the Holy Spirit does not bear witness to our human reasoning. The Spirit does not simply confirm that our logic or judgment is correct. Rather, the Holy Spirit bears witness to the redemptive work of Jesus Christ and leads us according to God's will. Therefore, we should not casually assume that our own thoughts are the will of the Spirit, nor should we expect God to endorse our personal judgments. Instead, we must examine whether our thinking is being shaped and corrected by the Word of God.
Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” Purity of heart means more than merely avoiding outward sin. It also involves laying aside our selfish desires and stubbornness before God and valuing His will above our own. When our hearts are consumed with proving that we are right, it becomes difficult to recognize what God desires. But when we surrender our own opinions and trust in the Lord, we become more able to discern what pleases Him.
Romans 8:16 says:
“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.”
The Holy Spirit assures us that we belong to God as His children. Our confidence in the Christian life does not grow from proving how reasonable or correct our own judgments are. It grows as we trust the God who has saved us through Jesus Christ. This does not mean that we should abandon reason or act without thinking. God can certainly use our minds, but He does not intend for our reasoning to take precedence over His Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Even today, we can easily put our own thoughts first whenever we face a decision. We may pray while secretly waiting for God to approve the answer we have already chosen. Yet genuine faith is not about persuading God to accept our plans. It is about laying our plans before Him and willingly submitting to His will.
Today, lay aside your desire to prove that you are right, and put your trust in the Lord. Even when you do not fully understand, hold firmly to God's Word and obey Him. As you do, the Holy Spirit will guide you in the truth and help you grow in a deeper knowledge of God.
A person who is pure in heart is not someone who looks only to their own reasoning, but someone who looks to God. May we live this day trusting the Lord more than our own judgments, seeking His will above our own, and willingly following the leading of the Holy Spirit.
<Reflection Question> Am I asking God to approve of my own thinking, or am I willing to lay aside my opinions and submit to His will?
