We live in interesting times as business and professional people. I am a part of a generation in the United States that has been given the nickname of“Baby Boomers,”and for many of us, the primary aim at work is to retire.

미국에서 흔히들 말하는 베이비 붐어 세대로 직장에 나가 일하는 목표가 은퇴하기 위해서라고 생각하는 좀 우스운 세대의 사람입니다.  

Case in point, I recently overheard a conversation at a party. A man who was nearing retirement commented that he could hardly wait until he could quit his work. He said he hated his job and the only reason he continued going to work each day was he needed the money.

얼마 전 파티에 참석했다가 어떤 사람이 하는 말을 들었는데 은퇴날짜만 세고 있다고 했습니다. 왜냐하면 하는 일을 실어 하면서도 돈을 벌기 위해서 할 수 없이 매일 출근을 하기 때문이라는 것이었습니다.

I did not say anything to him, but my thought was,“What a pitiful way to live.”I cannot imagine going through life hating what I spend the greatest portion of my time doing. Some jobs are more rewarding than others. But even when I experience discouraging days, I still love what I do. At times in my life the work I was doing might not have been inspiring, but the people I encountered on a daily basis were inspiring to know and interact with.

아무 말은 안 했지만 그 사람이 참 가련하게 보였습니다. 살면서 대부분의 시간을 직장에서 보내면서도 자신이 하는 일이 실으면서도 억지로 한다는 것은 상상이 안 되는 일이기 때문입니다. 어떤 직업은 다른 직업보다 더 나을 수도 있습니다. 때로 위축되고 의기소침했던 일이 있었지만 저는 제가 하는 일을 여전히 좋아합니다. 때로는 무력감에 빠지기도 했었지만 매일 함께 일하던 동료들은 서로를 격려를 하며 상부상조하는 사람들이었습니다.   

When I hear people talking yearningly about retirement, I always think about the intrinsic value of work. In fact, there are many references in the Bible that speak to the nobility of work. Colossians 3:23, for instance, says we are to work with all our hearts at whatever we do. After all, it says, ultimately we are working as for the Lord.

사람들이 은퇴하고 싶다고 하는 말을 들을 때마다 일에 대한 본질적 가치를 생각했습니다. 성경은 일의 존엄성에 대해서 자주 언급합니다; 무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다해서 하면 그것이 주님을 위해서인 것이라고 했습니다. “무슨 일을 하든지 사람에게 하듯 하지 말고 주께 하듯 마음을 다해 하십시오” (골로새서3:23).

The Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes has many admonitions to work hard and enjoy it. Ecclesiastes 3:22 says, “So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot. For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?” In the popular paraphrase of the Bible, The Message, it says,“So I made up my mind that there's nothing better for us men and women than to have a good time in whatever we do that's our lot.” Work may be difficult and challenging, but God designed work also to be enjoyed.

전도서에서는 열심히 일하고 즐기라고 했습니다. “이렇듯 사람이 기쁘게 자기 일을 하는 것보다 더 나은 것이 없음을 내가 알았다. 그것이 그가 받은 몫이기 때문이다. 그가 죽은 뒤에 무슨 일이 일어나는지 알고 싶다고 누가 그를 다시 데려올 수 있겠는가?” (전도서3:22). 다시 말하면 어떤 일이든 즐거운 마음으로 하겠다는 마음을 가져야 하고 그렇게 하는 것이 우리의 몫이라는 말입니다.

Proverbs 22:29 says, “Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings.” You might say the secret to success is to do good work and then show it to people. Today we call that“product and marketing.” I believe the emphasis should be put on the product and not the effort to persuade people to purchase it. In other words, “Make good stuff.” If you do, you will have no trouble selling it.

잠언서는 “자기 일에 솜씨가 부지런한 사람을 보았느냐? 그런 사람은 왕들 앞에 설 것이며 낮고 천한 사람들 앞에 서지는 않을 것이다” (잠언22:29) 라고 말합니다. 성공의 비결은 일을 잘해서 남에게 보이는 것이라고 말할 수도 있습니다. 제품과 마케팅 이라고 할 수 있습니다. 제품을 우선시하고 고객에게 그 제품을 사도록 설득시키지 않아도 된다는 것입니다. 좋은 제품을 만들며 그것을 파는 데는 문제가 없을 것이기 때문 입니다.

When we work in this way, the idea of retiring becomes much less appealing. In fact, I am not at all looking forward to a time when I may not be physically able to do what I do. When I get to that point I might have to stop out of necessity; but I do not intend to stop working just because the calendar says I have put in enough time. Connecting retirement with how much money a person has saved also seems like a rather trivial pursuit.

이런 자세로 일을 한다면 은퇴라는 것이 그리 좋게만 보이지 않을 것입니다. 저는 은퇴날짜를 기다리지 않고 체력이 허락할 때까지 일할 생각입니다. 은퇴 할 때가 온다면 할 수 없겠지만 이제 세월이 많이 흘러 때가 되었으니 이쯤에서 그만두어야겠다는 생각은 전혀 없습니다. 또한 은퇴할 때 얼마나 많이 저축을 했느냐는 그리 중요한 일이 아니라고 생각합니다.

There is very little guidance from the Scriptures on the subject of retirement. The word is rarely used, and when it is, it means to “withdraw.” Is the main goal of work simply to reach a time when you can withdraw from productive living? The only actual reference to retirement in the Bible pertains to Levites, priests instructed to retire at the age of 50 – but even then they were to continue to assist younger priests. 성경은 은퇴에 대해서 별로 언급을 하지 않습니다. 은퇴라는 말은 거의 쓰지를 않고 물러날 때를 의미하는 말을 씁니다. 우리가 일하는 목적이 때가 되면 생산적인 삶에서 물러나기 위해서일까요? 성경에서 딱 한번 은퇴에 대한 언급이 있습니다. 레위 사제에게 나이 50에 물러나되 후배사제들을 도우라고 했습니다. [아래 필독권유 첫 구절 민수기8:23-26 입니다.]

The idea of retiring as we know it today is a recent phenomenon, largely a 20^th century idea brought on by longer life spans and the Industrial Revolution. Only in the past 60 years or so has retirement become something many people would aspire to. Only a few generations back, retirement was thought of as “too old to work” or “being put out to pasture.” Unless you are ready to be put out to pasture, learn to enjoy your work!

은퇴라는 개념은 20세기에 들어 산업혁명과 수명연장이 불러온 현상이라 할 수 있습니다. 은퇴라는 말은 지난 60여 년 전부터 사람들이 바래왔던 것입니다. 그 전 세대에서는 은퇴란 나이가 너무 들어 더 이상 일을 할 수 없을 때를 뜻했거나 해고 당했다는 의미가 있었습니다. 스스로 해고당할 준비가 되어 있지 않다면 일을 즐기는 법을 배우시기 바랍니다.
