Finally this evening, "The Passion". Mel Gibson's Film, "The Passion of the Christ", opens across the country tomorrow. And as we have said before the film itself, as in what it is about and Mr. Mel Gibson's promotion of it, has generated huge interest. The Los Angeles Times put its review on the front page today. At Yahoo, the search engine, it is third in the ranking today right after NASCAR and Britney Spears. ABC's Erin Hayes has been checking the box office today.
From Florida, "It was like I was feeling it.", to California, "It's intense, but it's what happened." And hundreds of points in-between, "Mel Gibson, you did a good job with this movie." The early buzz for "The Passion" has surpassed anything Hollywood had expected.
"This is a film that was made with two dead languages, English subtitles. This film was looked at as an art-house film, a labor of love, a limited release that would be lucky to make its money back."
But theater owners have been overwhelmed with requests for tickets. Some are booked till the middle of March. "I personally wouldn't be surprised to see this movie do a hundred dollars in the first five days."
Part of the reason this movie is so big so soon is that church groups are filling entire theaters. Yesterday, in Little Rock, Shreveport, Louisiana, last night in Atlanta, three thousand at this theater granted by a Christian businessman, who says people feel compelled to see this film. "You're going to have people who see it tonight, who are going to want to see it again and again and again."
And though it depicts the crucifixion in raw, unsparing detail, it is nonetheless captivating audiences, particularly Christians overwhelmed by the intensity of Christ's suffering. "Thank you, Jesus." "It was hard to watch. To see how he suffered for us." "And I'm sure that many millions more people will come out and see this movie because it's so moving. It's profound."
There are some for whom "the Passion" is too much. "Too violent. I couldn't sit through the movie again." But many say the enormity of Christ's love for mankind bears witnessing. "No, it wasn't too much. It's the truth. So, you really got to think about it. And it's ..." "You need to see it." "You need to see it. Yes."
And that response, Hollywood analysts say, means a movie once believed obscure at best, is likely to open as a blockbuster.

News 1. Spanish National Mourning.
In newspaper articles, radio and television announcements and even mobile phone messages, Spaniards are encouraging one another to take part in a planned mass demonstration this evening to protest against terror and yesterday's bloody attacks.
Across Spain, people held candlelit vigils throughout the night, expressing their sympathy with numerous victims.
The Spanish government has called for three days of national mourning.
Meanwhile, the official investigation and public speculation into who was behind the atrocity continues.
Intelligence officials here say there's conflicting evidence, pointing either to the Basque's separatist group, ETA, or an Islamist organization linked to al-Qaeda.
