Yesterday, we watched a short film explaining the Doppler Effect and its many practical uses. As you already know, the Doppler Effect was named after Christian Doppler. In this lecture, I will detail his life and major discovery.
Christian Doppler was born in Austria in 1803. His father worked as a stonemason. Unlike his father, Christian was not very strong, so he focused on studying philosophy, mathematics, and physics. During his academic life, he studied and worked at various universities and published several papers. The development of the Doppler Effect theory came about in 1842. At this time, Christian formed his hypothesis on the velocity of stars. He noticed that sounds coming from moving objects change pitch. This led him to argue that the color of a star’s light should change based on its velocity related to Earth. Christian’s discovery is used to explain and examine many modern theories, including the Big Bang Theory. It can also be applied to everyday activities, such as forecasting the weather or using radar for navigation purposes. In the end, Christian’s success has enabled modern-day scientists to better understand Earth, astronomy, and various physics-related hypotheses. Without his work from centuries ago, our understanding of life on our planet would not be what it is today. For homework, I would like you to research one practical use of the Doppler Effect and prepare a short presentation.
