Many people believed in Jesus, while many others hated Him and argued with Him, as seen in John 8.
Today's passage is directed at those who believe in and listen to Jesus—specifically, the believing Jews, and by extension, us.
“If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Abiding in Jesus' words makes one His disciple. To abide means to "remain." Believing in Jesus means dwelling in His words.
To become Jesus' disciple, one must dwell in His words and serve in the church. A disciple of Jesus and a church worker are the same. A church worker must be a disciple who follows Jesus.
By doing so, one comes to know the truth, and that truth sets us free. The meaning of truth is righteousness, firmness (unshakable), integrity, and eternity. Therefore, truth is based on God's righteousness and reflects His eternal and faithful nature.
