Shopping when We're Hungry May Cost Us More

If you want to save money at the supermarket, don't go shopping when you're hungry!

At least, that's according to a survey for the banana company Dole.

It found that 76% of people are likely to spend more if they're in the store when their stomachs are rumbling.

The average shopper in the US spends an extra $26 at these times.

Not only that, about six out of 10 people said they forget about their health goals when they shop while they're hungry.

Dole had the survey company OnePoll ask 2,000 people in the US about their shopping habits.

They also found that the average American spends $162 per week on shopping, and they make trips to two stores each week to get everything they need.

People typically spend about 39 minutes on their trip around the supermarket, although this may depend on the time they go. They said the quietest time is between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., while it's busiest between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Even as many people find that shopping has gotten a little more expensive, not many are good at budgeting when they're in the supermarket.

About 62% said they usually spend more than they'd planned to.

However, 56% use a shopping list when they're buying groceries, and more than three-quarters of these people said it makes them less likely to overspend.
