A funeral service for Choi Bool-am was held Monday, with his family and fellow actors paying their respects to the iconic actor, known for portraying paternal figures in popular television dramas.

인기 TV 드라마에서 주로 아버지상을 연기하며 국민적인 사랑을 받았던 배우 최불암의 장례식이 월요일 엄수되었다. 유족과 동료 배우들이 참석해 고인을 추모했다.

Choi, whose real name was Choi Young-han, died Thursday while receiving treatment at a hospital in western Seoul. He was 87.

본명이 최영한인 고인은 목요일 서울 서부 지역의 한 병원에서 치료를 받던 중 별세했다. 향년 87세.

His longtime wife, Kim Min-ja, also an actor, was seen in tears, following the funeral service held privately at Asan Medical Center in southeastern Seoul.

서울 아산병원에서 비공개로 진행된 장례식 후, 고인의 아내이자 배우인 김민자가 눈물을 흘리는 모습이 포착되었다.

Kim was accompanied by actor Kim Hye-soo, who had stayed alongside Choi's bereaved family since the first day of the funeral service.

김민자 곁에는 장례 첫날부터 유족과 함께 자리를 지킨 배우 김혜수가 동행했다.

The funeral service was followed by a funeral Mass at a cathedral in western Seoul, presided over by Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung, the former archbishop of Seoul.

장례식에 이어 서울 서부 지역의 한 성당에서 장례 미사가 거행되었으며, 전 서울대교구장인 염수정 추기경이 집전했다.

The Mass was attended by guests, including Culture Minister Chae Hwi-young, actor and former Culture Minister Yoo In-chon, and actors Song Il-kook and Shin Hyun-joon, as well as members of the public and the church.

미사에는 채휘영 문화부 장관, 유인촌 전 문화부 장관(배우), 배우 송일국과 신현준을 비롯한 여러 인사와 일반 시민, 신도들이 참석했다.

Yeom described the late actor as "the nation's father and a beloved actor" who comforted people and brought hope in difficult times.

염 추기경은 고인을 "국민의 아버지이자 사랑받는 배우"로 회고하며, 그가 어려운 시기에 사람들에게 위로와 희망을 전했다고 말했다.

"It is deeply sad that we can no longer see brother Choi Bool-am Francisco's comforting smile," Yeom said.

염 추기경은 "고(故) 최불암 프란치스코 형제의 위로가 담긴 미소를 더 이상 볼 수 없게 되어 매우 슬프다"고 전했다.

"He devoted his life to acting and became a friend for the marginalized in our society by bringing laughter and joy," the cardinal said. "He gave his all to acting, sharing the joys and sorrows of the people."

이어 "그는 평생을 연기에 헌신했고, 웃음과 기쁨을 선사하며 우리 사회 소외된 이들의 친구가 되어주었다"며, "연기를 통해 대중의 기쁨과 슬픔을 함께 나누며 자신의 모든 것을 쏟아냈다"고 덧붙였다.

Choi was baptized by Yeom in 2018 and received his anointing of the sick from the cardinal just days before his death. Hwang Young-ki, chairman of the ChorogUsan for Children foundation, where Choi had devoted himself to promoting the rights of children and youth for decades, also paid tribute to the late actor.

최불암은 2018년 염 추기경에게 세례를 받았으며, 별세 며칠 전에도 염 추기경으로부터 병자성사를 받았다. 고인이 수십 년간 아동과 청소년의 권익 증진을 위해 헌신했던 ‘초록우산’ 재단의 황영기 회장 또한 고인을 추모했다.

"It is still unbelievable and heartbreaking that we can no longer see his generous smile nor hear his warm voice that used to say it is the role of adults to give hope to children," said Hwang, vowing to uphold Choi's wishes to guard children.

황 회장은 “아이들에게 희망을 주는 것이 어른들의 역할이라고 말씀하시던 그 따뜻한 목소리와 너그러운 미소를 이제는 더 이상 볼 수 없다는 사실이 여전히 믿기지 않고 가슴이 아프다”고 말하며, 아이들을 지키고자 했던 고인의 뜻을 이어가겠다고 다짐했다.

A farewell event also took place at the headquarters of the foundation before the late actor was laid to rest at a memorial park in Paju, north of Seoul.

고인은 서울 북쪽 파주에 위치한 추모 공원에 안장되기 전, 초록우산 재단 본부에서 열린 고별 행사를 거쳤다.

Born in Incheon in 1939, Choi became a household name through his role as detective Park Young-han in MBC's long-running crime drama "Chief Inspector" and as the village foreman in the rural family drama "Country Diaries," Korea's longest-running television series.

1939년 인천에서 태어난 고인은 MBC의 장수 범죄 수사 드라마 ‘수사반장’에서 박영한 형사 역을 맡고, 한국 최장수 드라마인 농촌 가족극 ‘전원일기’에서 마을 반장 역을 연기하며 국민 배우로 자리매김했다.

Tributes have poured in for the beloved actor, who boasts a career of nearly seven decades, with actors, politicians and police officials paying respect.

70년에 가까운 연기 인생을 보낸 이 사랑받는 배우를 향해 동료 배우, 정치인, 경찰 관계자 등 각계각층에서 추모의 뜻이 이어졌다.

On Friday, he was posthumously awarded the Geumgwan (Gold Crown) Order of Cultural Merit, Korea's highest cultural decoration, in recognition of his lifelong contributions to Korean television, film and theater.

지난 금요일, 고인은 한국의 텔레비전, 영화, 연극 발전에 평생 기여한 공로를 인정받아 한국 최고 등급의 문화훈장인 ‘금관문화훈장’을 추서받았다.
