그 안에 귀중한 물건들이 있는 것처럼 그것이 열리지 않도록 가죽 띠가 그 여행가방을 감싸고 있다. 사실 그 여행가방은 낡은 옷가지들, 햇빛이 거의 다 지워버린 사진 한 장, 그리고 노인이 그 안에 흙 한 줌을 집어넣은 헝겊 주머니가 들어있을 뿐이다. 그가 가지고 올 수 있었던 모든 것이 거기에 있다. 그리고 아이도 물론.

Une sangle entoure la valise afin qu’elle ne puisse pas s’ouvrir, comme si à l’intérieur se trouvaient des biens précieux. En vérité, elle ne contient que des vêtements usagés, une photographie que la lumière du soleil a presque entièrement effacée, et un sac de toile dans lequel le vieil homme a glissé une poignée de terre. C’est là tout ce qu’il a pu emporter. Et l’enfant bien sûr.

곁에 둔 가방은 무어 귀중한 것이라도 들었는지 가죽 끈으로 단단히 동여매져 있었다. 사실 가방에 든 것이라고는 헌 옷가지와 분간하기 힘들 만큼 빛바랜 사진 한 장, 노인이 주머니에 한 줌 담아 온 고향의 흙이 다였다. 노인이 챙겨 올 수 있던 것이라고는 그게 전부였다. 물론 갓난쟁이 아기를 포함해서 말이다.

A strap holds the suitcase together to prevent it coming apart, as if there were precious goods inside it. In actual fact, it merely contains old clothes, a photograph that is almost entirely faded by the sunlight, and a canvas bag into which the old man has sprinkled a fistful of earth. That was everything he was able to take with him. And the child, of course.

아이는 온순하다. 딸이다. 그녀는 린 씨가 그와 비슷한 수많은 다른 사람들과 함께 배에 오를 때에 생후 6주이다. 그들은 모든 것을 잃어버린, 서둘러서 다시 모인, 그리고 자기 자신을 방임한 남자와 여자들이다.

L’enfant est sage. C’est une fille. Elle avait six semaines lorsque Monsieur Linh est monté à bord avec un nombre infini d’autres gens semblables à lui, des hommes et des femmes qui ont tout perdu, que l’on a regroupés à la hâte et qui se sont laissé faire.

아기는 순해 보였다. 여자 아이였다. 무슈 린은 이 어린 것을 품에 안고서 자신처럼 모든 것을 잃고 낙망한 채 그저 떠밀리듯 밀려온 수많은 사람들과 함께 배에 올랐다. 아기가 태어난 지 겨우 6주가 지났을 때의 일이었다.

The child is well behaved. She is a girl. She was six weeks old when Monsieur Linh came on board with a countless number of other people similar to him, men and women who had lost everything, who had been hurriedly rounded up and who did as they were told.

6주. 그것은 여행이 지속되는 시간이다. 그리하여 배가 목적지에 도착할 때 그 작은 여자애는 그녀의 인생의 시간을 두 배로 만들었다. 노인으로서는 한 세기를 지낸 느낌이다.

Six semaines. C’est le temps que dure le voyage. Si bien que lorsque le bateau arrive à destination, la petite fille a déjà doublé le temps de sa vie. Quant au vieil homme, il a l’impression d’avoir vieilli d’un siècle.

Six weeks. This is how long the voyage lasts. So that when the ship arrives at its destination, the little girl has already doubled the length of her life. As for the old man, he feels as if he has aged a hundred years.

Parfois, il murmure une chanson à la petite, toujours la même, et il voit les yeux du nourrisson s’ouvrir et sa bouche aussi. Il la regarde, et il aperçoit davantage que le visage d’une très jeune enfant. Il voit des paysages, des matins lumineux, la marche lente et paisible des buffles dans les rizières, l’ombre ployée des grands banians à l’entrée de son village, la brume bleue qui descend des montagnes vers le soir, à la façon d’un châle qui glisse doucement sur des épaules.

노인은 아기에게 나지막이 노래를 불러주곤 했다. 언제나 같은 노래였지만 노래를 들을 때면 젖먹이 아가의 눈이 환하게 밝아지는 걸 느낄 수 있었다. 아기의 얼굴을 그렇게 가만히 들여다보고 있노라면 그 얼굴 너머로 너무나 많은 장면이 겹쳐왔다. 눈부시게 쏟아져 내리는 아침 햇살도, 논에 나가 맞이하는 평화롭고 느긋한 아침나절도, 동네 어귀 바나나 나무가 드리우는 널찍한 그늘도, 저녁 무렵이면 산에서 마을로 슬그머니 내려오는 푸른 안개도 보였다.

Occasionally, he hums a song to the little girl, always the same one, and he sees the baby’s eyes open, and her mouth too. He watches her, and he observes much more than the face of a very young child. He sees landscapes, bright mornings, the slow and peaceful plod of the buffalo in the paddy fields, the bowed shadow of the giant banyan trees at the entrance to his village, the blue mist that comes down from the mountains towards evening, like a shawl that falls softly over one’s shoulders.

그가 아이에게 준 우유가 그녀의 입술 주위로 흐른다. 린 씨는 여전히 서툴다. 그는 서투르다. 그러나 어린애는 울지 않는다. 그녀는 다시 잠으로 돌아가고, 그, 그는 수평선, 배가 지나간 자리의 거품 그리고 이미 오래 전에 그가 더 이상 알아볼 수 없게 된 먼 곳으로 되돌아간다.

Le lait qu’il donne à l’enfant coule sur le bord de ses lèvres. Monsieur Linh n’a pas l’habitude encore. Il est maladroit. Mais la petite fille ne pleure pas. Elle retourne au sommeil, et lui, il revient vers l’horizon, l’écume du sillage et le lointain dans lequel, depuis bien longtemps déjà, il ne distingue plus rien.

The milk he is giving the child runs down the corners of her lips. Monsieur Linh is not used to this yet. He is clumsy. But the little girl does not cry. She goes back to sleep, and as for him, he continues to gaze out over the horizon, over the foam made by the wake, and into the far distance in which, for quite a long time now, he has no longer been able to discern anything.

Enfin, un jour de novembre, le bateau parvient à sa destination, mais le vieil homme ne veut pas en descendre. Quitter le bateau, c’est quitter vraiment ce qui le rattache encore à sa terre. Deux femmes alors le mènent avec des gestes doux vers le quai, comme s’il était malade. Il fait très froid. Le ciel est couvert. Monsieur Linh respire l’odeur du pays nouveau. Il ne sent rien. Il n’y a aucune odeur. C’est un pays sans odeur. Il serre l’enfant plus encore contre lui, chante la chanson à son oreille. En vérité, c’est aussi pour lui-même qu’il la chante, pour entendre sa propre voix et la musique de sa langue.

11월의 어느 날. 마침내 배가 목적지에 도착했다. 노인은 내리고 싶지 않았다. 이 배에서 발을 떼는 그 순간, 떠나온 고향과 연결된 모든 것들과 영영 이별일 것만 같아서였다. 두 명의 여인이 무슈 린에게 다가오더니 그를 환자 대하듯 조심스레 부축하여 배에서 내리는 걸 도왔다. 시리도록 추운 날씨. 하늘은 구름으로 온통 짙게 덮여 있었다. 노인은 처음 발을 디딘 이 땅에서 깊게 숨을 들이마셔 본다. 아무런 냄새도 나질 않는다. 그 어떤 냄새도 맡을 수가 없다. 냄새가 없는 나라……. 노인은 아기의 귓가에 대고 노래를 불러준다. 그러고는 아기를 한 번 더 꼭 껴안는다. 사실 그 노래는 무슈 린 자신을 위한 노래이기도 하다. 자신의 목소리를 듣는 것이, 또 자신의 나라 말로 된 노래를 듣는 것이 이 순간 무엇보다 절실한 위로였던 것이다.

Finally, one November day, the ship arrives at its destination, but the old man does not want to get off. Leaving the ship means leaving behind what still binds him to his homeland. Two women then lead him gently towards the quayside, as if he were unwell. It is very cold. The sky is overcast. Monsieur Linh breathes in the smell of the new land. He does not smell anything. There is no smell. It is a land without smell. He clasps the child more closely to him and he sings the song in her ear. Really he sings it for himself as well, so that he can hear his own voice and the music of his language.

린 씨와 아이는 부두에 그들만 있지 않다. 그들과 같은 이들이 수백명이다. 노인들과 젊은이들, 고분고분하게 기다리는, 그들 곁에 그들의 보잘것없는 짐들을 둔 채, 어디로 가야 할지 누군가 말해주기를, 그들이 한 번도 겪어보지 못한 추위 속에서 기다리는. 아무도 이야기를 나누지 않는다. 그들은 슬픈 얼굴들을 한 허약한 조각상들이며 가장 큰 침묵 속에서 떨고 있는 상들이었다.

Monsieur Linh et l’enfant ne sont pas seuls sur le quai. Ils sont des centaines, comme eux. Vieux et jeunes, attendant docilement, leurs maigres effets à leurs côtés, attendant sous un froid tel qu’ils n’en ont jamais connu qu’on leur dise où aller. Aucun ne se parle. Ce sont de frêles statues aux visages tristes, et qui grelottent dans le plus grand silence.

부두에는 무슈 린과 아기 외에도 비슷한 처지에 놓인 수백 명의 사람들이 더 있었다. 초라하고 여윈 모습의 젊은이들과 노인들이 이제껏 겪어보지 못한 낯설고 혹독한 추위를 견뎌내며 다음 이동 지시를 기다리고 있었다. 누구 하나 말하는 사람이 없었다. 그들은 마치 거대한 침묵 속에 떨고 있는 슬픈 얼굴의 조각상들 같았다.

Monsieur Linh and the child are not alone on the quayside. There are hundreds of people, like themselves. Old and young, waiting obediently, their meagre belongings alongside them, waiting in weather that is colder than any they have ever known, to be told where to go. No-one talks to anyone else. They are frail statues with sad faces, shivering in utter silence.

배에서 내리는 데 그를 도와준 여자들 가운데 하나가 그에게로 다시 온다. 그녀는 그에게 그녀를 따라오라고 제스처를 한다. 그는 그녀의 말을 이해하지 못했으나 그녀의 제스처는 이해한다. 그는 여자에게 아이를 보여준다. 그녀는 아이를 보고 망설이는 것 같다가 결국 미소 짓는다. 그는 그녀를 따라가기 시작했다.

Une des femmes qui l’a aidé à descendre du bateau revient à lui. Elle lui fait signe de la suivre. Il ne comprend pas ses mots mais il comprend ses gestes. Il montre l’enfant à la femme. Elle le regarde, paraît hésiter, et finalement sourit. Il se met en marche et la suit.

One of the women who had helped him leave the ship comes up to him again. She indicates that he should follow her. He does not understand what she is saying, but he understands her gestures. He shows the child to the woman.

She looks at it, appears to hesitate, and eventually smiles. He starts to walk and follows her.

그 아이의 부모는 린 씨의 자녀들(=아들, 며느리)였다. 아이의 아버지는 그의 아들이었다. 그들은 이미 몇 년부터 나라에 그 맹위를 떨치고 있는 전쟁에서 죽었다. 그들은 어느날 아침에 아이와 함께 논으로 일하러 나갔고 저녁에 그들은 돌아오지 않았다. 노인은 달려갔다. 그는 숨가쁘게 논 가까이에 도착했다. 그 주변에 배가 갈라진 물소의 시체, 지푸라기처럼 둘로 부서진 멍에가 있는 커다랗고 찰랑거리는 웅덩이 밖에는 없었다.

Les parents de l’enfant étaient les enfants de Monsieur Linh. Le père de l’enfant était son fils. Ils sont morts dans la guerre qui fait rage au pays depuis des années déjà. Ils sont partis un matin travailler dans les rizières, avec l’enfant, et le soir ils ne sont pas revenus. Le vieil homme a couru. Il est arrivé essoufflé près de la rizière. Ce n’était plus qu’un trou immense et clapotant, avec sur un côté du cratère un cadavre de buffle éventré, son joug brisé en deux comme un brin de paille.

이 갓난쟁이 아기의 부모는 무슈 린의 아들과 며느리였다. 두 사람 다 몇 년째 계속되던 참혹한 전쟁 통에 목숨을 잃었다. 어느 날, 여느 때처럼 아기를 안고 아침 일찍 논에 일을 나갔던 부부는 저녁이 되어도 돌아올 줄 몰랐다. 그걸 안 노인은 숨을 헐떡이며 논 근처로 그들을 찾아 나섰다. 그곳에서 그가 발견한 것은 깊게 패여 물이 가득 고여 있던 커다란 구덩이와 멍에가 짜개지고 배가 터진 채 쓰러져 있던 물소의 시체였다.

The child’s parents were Monsieur Linh’s children. The child’s father was his son. They died in the war that has been raging in his country for years now. They set off one morning to work in the paddy fields, with the child, and by the evening they had not returned. The old man ran. He was out of breath when he arrived at the rice field. It was nothing but a vast hole, bubbling with water, with the corpse of a disembowelled buffalo lying on one side of the crater, its yoke broken in two like a bit of straw.
