493. had better ＋ 동･원                                ~하는 편이 낫다

*현재나 미래를 나타내는 표현(과거는 안 됨)이며 to없는 부정사를 사용

- had better구문은 →It would be better for ~ to R구문으로 바꿔 쓸 수 있다. 이 표현은 대개 윗사람이 아랫사람 에게 강한 권유나 충고를 할 때 쓰이며 should로 대치하여 쓰이기도 한다.

- you had better는 please와 Why don't you~ 와 같은 뜻이다.

- 주의:had better의 부정은 had better not 이므로 to는 사용할 수 없다.

 You‘d better not go to work today. (너는 오늘 일하러 가지 않는 것이 좋겠다.)

- had better와 would rather의 비교: strong advice vs better choice

-had better는 화자가 다른 사람에게 충고할 때 강하게 말하는 것으로 should를 의미하며 심지어 협박의 의미로까지 사용되어 ‘너는 ~하는 게 좋다(It would be good to ∼)’ 등으로 사용하고 would rather는 본인이 취해야 할 두 가지 행동을 두고, 그 중 한 가지를 선택하고 싶다는 심경이나 의지를 나타낸다. 따라서 would rather는 ‘It would be better to ∼'의 의미를 가지고 있으며(had rather + 동사원형 = prefer to + 동사원형) 둘 이상의 선택의 가능성이 있음을 전제로 사용한다. 왜냐하면 You would rather go there by taxi.(당신은 거기에 차라리(오히려) 택시로 가고 싶습니다.)라는 표현이 나와서 이상하다. 따라서 본인(You)이 선택하고자 하는 심경이나 의지를 내(I)가 말할 수 없는 것이어서 You would rather는 긍정문에서 쓸 수 없다. Would you rather join the army?(너는 차라리 군에 갔으면 하지?), I would rather run away from home.(난 차라리 가출하고 싶어.), She would rather live single. (그녀는 차라리 독신으로 살고 싶어한다.)식으로 예문을 연장해서 볼 수 있다. 다시말하면 would rathe~는 ‘would rather+동사 ~ than ~ ‘구문에서 than이하를 생략한 문장이라고 보면 된다. She would rather live single than live get married.(그녀는 결혼하기 보다 차라리 독신으로 살고 싶어한다.)의 뜻이다.

- had better의 과거형: ‘~하는 편이 좋다’의 과거형은 ‘과거에 그렇게 되지 않았떤 것에 대한 일종의 유감스러움을 표현하는 말이 된다. 그래서 should have +p.p 형태를 사용해서 표현한다. You had better study hard.(너는 열심히 공부하는 게 낫겠다.)의 과거형은 You should have worked harder. (너는 더 열심히 공부했어야 했는데.)식으로 하면 되겠다.

		We had better make plans for next month. (우리는 다음 달을 위해 계획을 잘 짜는 게 좋겠다.) -계획을 잘 세우지 않으면 좋지 않은 결과가 예상되기 때문이다.
would rather	better choice (더 좋은 선택)	· I would rather play tennis than swim. · Would you rather walk or take the bus? · I'd rather have a beer.
		It would be better to ... = prefer to do
		We would rather make plans for next month. (우리는 다음 달을 위해 계획을 보다 더 철저히 하는 게 낫겠다.) -여러가지 선택중에서 판단할 때 더 좋은 선택을 하여야 좋은 결과가 예상되기 때문이다.

= It would be better for you to leave her alone.

(너는 그녀를 혼자 내버려 두는 것이 좋겠다.)

․ You had better not overwork yourself.

= It would be better for you not to overwork yourself.

(과로하지 않는 편이 좋겠다.)

․ You had better stay at home.

= You may as well stay at home.

= You would do well to stay at home.

= It would be better for you to stay at home.

= It would be wise of you to stay at home.

(너는 집에 머물러 있는 게 낫다.)

․ I would rather die than surrender.

(항복하느니 차라리 죽겠다.)

․ You had better not go there alone.

 =You should not go there alone.

(혼자 거기 안 가는 것이 좋겠다.)

 = Please go to meet her.

= Why don't you go to meet her.

(그녀를 만나러 가는 편이 좋겠군요.)

(당신은 새벽까지 여기서 쉬는 게 낫다.)
