Sneak Preview: Romeo and Juliet
During my sophomore year in high school, I got sick and had to miss a few days of school. When I returned, I was greeted with two essay assignments, three days of math and history homework, a biology lab to make up, and several tests to take. That night I had to stay up really late to accomplish it all.
I thought I had it all finished, but the next day at school, I suddenly remembered I’d forgotten to study for the test on Romeo and Juliet, which I had to take during my lunch hour! Because I was absent, I had missed the last two scenes of the play that the rest of the class had read and discussed together. On my day back there was so much happening in my morning classes, I had no time to study the play. When lunch time came, I went to the English room to take the test. All I could do was try to remember as much as I could and guess on the questions I didn't know.
Unfortunately, I didn't know the majority of the questions. I was considering turning in my paper, knowing I'd failed the test, when I broke my pencil point accidently. I quickly walked to the front of the room to the pencil sharpener. Standing there sharpening my pencil, I looked down at the teacher’s desk and saw the answer sheet for the test. My first thought was, What luck! I’ve been saved from failing the test. My heart started thumping, and my brain whispered, Do it! Read over the answers! This was quickly followed by my conscious yelling, No! You'll get caught! My mind went back and forth: Yes! No! Yes! No! This went on for ten of the longest seconds in my entire life.
Finally, I decided to finish the test on my own, without cheating. I knew I would feel completely guilty if I copied the answers. So I finished the test and handed it in, even though I was pretty certain I had failed the test.
When I walked into the English room the next day, my pride of having been an honest soul changed to a feeling of doom as I saw my test lying face down on my desk. I stared at it a few seconds before I got up the nerve to turn it over, expecting the inevitable F. You can only imagine my shock when I saw I had passed the test! I have never been so happy to see a D⁻.
My mom says the victories that take the most courage are won within. Now I know what she means. Sometimes it takes a lot of courage to do the right thing. It certainly did for me. But in the end not only could my conscience rest easy, but I didn't have to worry about getting caught and meeting a tragic end like Romeo and Juliet.
