The Gospel According to John Chapter 2
The Bible Text from https://www.bible.com/bible/111/JHN.2.NIV
The Beginning of the Public Ministry
Jesus Changes Water Into Wine
1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee(1, Map). Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. (It was a normal wedding that Jesus was invited to.)
3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman (General vocative which was common in the Greek.), why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” (Jesus was hesitant for public appearance.)
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” (But the mother Mary who knew what kind of person her son is from the conception caused His ministry. Lk. 1:35, Mt.1:21)
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. (The water was commonly prepared for cleansing.)
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” (Jesus turned water to wine. It had happened due to the Physics of God.) (3, Jesus/God and Water)
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. (It was the first sign of divinity of Jesus.)
12 After this he went down to Capernaum (17-25 miles east, shore) with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days. (Went to Capernaum.)
Jesus Clears the Temple Courts
13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. (2, Map) (4, How many times Jesus visited Jerusalem.)
14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. (Selling items for sacrifice and exchanging currencies for offering in the temple courts are common at the time.)
15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.
16 To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” (Jesus, however, rebuked and chased them out since the usual practices became corrupt.)
17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” (It was righteous rage. Ps. 69:9)
18 The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” (The merchants asked Jesus what authority he had to act like this.)
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” (Rebuilding the fallen temple in three days is physically impossible. But Jesus meant His death and resurrection in three days.)
21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body.
22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken. (Rebuilding the fallen temple in three days is physically impossible. But Jesus meant His death and resurrection in three days as the Messiah.)
23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name. (Many people were drown to Him because of His miracles.)
24 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people.
25 He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person. (But Jesus didn't trust them because they were fallible ordinaries. Becoming true believers and committing to His cause must take long term discipline.)

Key Bible stories of Jesus interacting with water demonstrate his power over nature and his role as a spiritual provider. Major narratives include turning water into wine at Cana (John 2:1–11), calming a storm on the Sea of Galilee (Mark 4:35–41), walking on water (Matthew 14:22–33), and offering "living water" to the Samaritan woman (John 4).
Key Stories of Jesus and Water:
1. Turning Water into Wine (John 2:1-11): At a wedding in Cana, Jesus performed his first miracle by transforming water in purification jars into wine.
2. Calming the Storm (Mark 4:35-41): When a violent storm threatened the boat on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus rebuked the wind and waves, demonstrating his authority over creation.
3. Walking on Water (Matthew 14:22-33; Mark 6:45-56; John 6:16-21): Jesus walked on the Sea of Galilee to his terrified disciples during a storm, with Peter briefly joining him before doubting and sinking.
4. The Samaritan Woman at the Well (John 4): Jesus met a woman at Jacob's well and offered her "living water," symbolizing spiritual life and salvation, as opposed to physical, temporary water.
5. Baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3:13-17): Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist, marking the start of his public ministry.
6. Washing the Disciples' Feet (John 13:1-17): During the Last Supper, Jesus washed his disciples' feet with water, demonstrating servant leadership.
7. Thirst of Jesus on the cross (John 19:28): Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” (2Sam. 23:13-17)
Symbolic Significance
Water in these stories often represents purification, life, and the new covenant, with Jesus acting as the source of "living water" that nourishes the spirit.
Also in Old Testament,
1. Gen. 1:2, Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
2. Ps. 29:3, The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.
3. Isa. 27:1, In that day, the Lord will punish with his sword—his fierce, great and powerful sword—Leviathan the gliding serpent, Leviathan the coiling serpent; he will slay the monster of the sea.
