▣ Nine in the Second Line(九二,구이) :
The dragon appears in the field; it is beneficial to see the greaat man.
[Interpretation]
For Nine in the Second Line, as the dragon has appeared and is now in the field,
it is advantageous to grant an audience to(Meet) a great person.
[Explanation]
A dragon ought to soar upon water or clouds, yet it is said to appear in a dry
field devoid of even a drop of moisture― not even a flooded paddy ―
suggesting times are unusual.
In times like this, one can only succeed by meeting a great person who can guide them.
This is the second Yao text(Line Statement) by the Duke of Zhou.
Though the dragon has emerged into the world, it sits in a field without a drop of water.
Since a dargon at its peak vigor needs to meet water, lingering in a dry field is akin
to a bachelor who has yet to find a spouse and marry.
Even sage scholars and holy men must meet the right timing.
Confucius′s detailed commentary reads as follows :
"The dragon appearing in the field[Hyeon-ryong-jae-jeon]"
means spreading virtue far and wide[Deok-si-bo-ya].
It is emphasized again in the 'Wenyan Zhuan" (Commentart on the words) :
"The dragon appearing in the field[Hyeon-ryong-jae-jeon]" means temporarily set aside
[Jip-sa-ya] ; yet, when the era of the manifest dragon arrives again, it will shine a light
more brilliant than anyone else under the heavens[Cheon-ha-mun-myeong].
The explanation continues :
What does "The dragon appearing in the field, it is beneficial to see the great man
[Hyeon-ryong-jae-jeon-l-gyeon-dae-in]" mean [Ha-wi-ya]?
A Manifest Dragon(Hyeon-ryong) refers to one who dragon and strives to secure
both the right time and place[Yong-deok-i-jeong-jung-ja-ya].
"Therefore, one must always speak with trustworthiness[Yong-eon-ji-sin],
act with trustworthiness[Yong-eon-ji-sin],
act with caution and care[Yong-haeng-ji-geun],
Maintain a sincere attitude, and keep evil at a distance[Han-sa-jon-gi-seong].
Furtermore, even if you possess qualities superior to the rest of the world,
you must embody the humility never to boast before others[Deok-bak-i-hwak]."
[Nine in the Second Line] represents the case where the Qian Hexagram(the Creative)
transitions into the Tongren Hexagram(Fellowship with Men).
Although a vitruous scholar living in retirement has not yet found his opportune time,
through him, the world will eventually become civilized, and through his learning,
the people will be enlightened and guided.
Dongpa(Su Su) also noted that if there is one thing that cannot be added to a sage
like yao or Shun, nor subtracted from a villain like Jie or Zhou,
it is the difference in 'Sincerity'(誠,- Seong) :
"Evil must be prevented by any means.
Regardless of whether one is a sage or a villain, once all evil is eliminated,
what remains indestrutible is naturally indestructible is naturally perserved―
and that is 'Sincerity'(誠,- Seong).
If one can only hold onto that 'Sincerity'(誠,- Seong),
all evil in the world can be kept away[Han-sa-jon-gi- seong]."
Therefore, Confucius stated :
" A Junzi(Gentleman) diligently learns to gather knowledge[Gwan-i-geo-ji],
and fulfills their duties as a human being[In-i haeng-ji],
making it beneficial to meet the great man."
He stated, "This clearly means 'the dragon appearing in the field[Hyeon-ryong-jae-jeon],
it is beneficial to see the great man[I-gyeon-dae-in]'."
There are quite a few songs invoking 'It is beneficial to see the great man'
[I-gyeon-dae-in], with Sond-am and Do-eun being representative examples.
As a historical allusion for[Nine in the Second Line],
it is sometimes interpreted through the actions of King Wen of Zhou,
who gained the allegince of feudal lords after being released from seven years
of imprisonment in Yuli.
Upon returning to Qizhou, King Wen secured Tae Gong Mang(Jiang Ziya)
as his master, conquered various state nations,
and ultimately relocated the capital to Pung-eup.
It is also viewed as the period when Emperor Shun(Da Shun) farmed
and fished before being recommended to Emperor Yao,
or the time when Confucius wandered across warring states urgently
seeking a position[Hwang-hwang-gu-sa], both representing instances
of the 'Manifest Dragon in the Field'[Hyeon-ryong-jae-jeon].
It is handed down in story that knowing Zhuge Liang was a figure
who had accumulated the virtue of a 'manifest dragon'[Hyeon-ryong],
Liu Bei visited his thatched cottage three times[Sam-go-cho-ryeo] To...
