My purpose in publishing this letter today is by no means to capitalise on the tragic wars and conflicts between nations occurring across the globe in order to beg for momentary attention. The reason we are so eager to announce the launch of G.Y.B – 11.11 R&R DAY to the world is that we have finally put in place the ‘technical framework’ and ‘philosophical foundation’ capable of effectively safeguarding human life.

In order to send this letter out into the world today, I have quietly and steadfastly held this noble calling for humanity close to my heart for the past 18 long years.

For the past 18 years, we have devoted ourselves entirely to research and dedication to humanity. Throughout that long and solitary journey, we have prepared ourselves by steadfastly enduring intense research to overcome technical limitations and countless trials and errors behind the scenes.

I sincerely hope this message gets across clearly. I am writing to you to express my deep respect for your work and to encourage people around the world to get involved.

Having worked in the field of industrial explosives safety for over 18 years, I have witnessed countless loss of life resulting from industrial accidents. These experiences were the catalyst that led me to devote myself to research and technological development. Through this research, I realised that I must not stop at technological development alone, but must also fulfil my responsibility to ensure the safety of future generations whilst honouring the sacrifices of the past.

I felt a strong need to foster a global culture grounded in these memories and this sense of responsibility.

I hope that people around the world, and everyone reading this, will recognise just how valuable and meaningful it is to honour the sacrifices of the past and to fulfil our responsibility to safeguard the safety of future generations.

For these reasons, we propose the following small-scale global initiative.

11 November is a date that has long held profound historical significance for the international community.

It is widely recognised as a day to honour those who sacrificed their lives to defend peace and freedom.

Many nations hold moments of silence and commemorative ceremonies to honour the fallen and reflect on the horrors of war.

We at G.Y.B – 11.11 Day of Remembrance and Responsibility – wish to carry on this tradition with the utmost respect. This initiative is not intended to replace existing commemorative events.

Rather, it proposes a broader civic and ethical reflection on the need for remembrance to lead to a sense of responsibility.

Throughout modern history, humanity has endured not only the tragedies of war but also catastrophic industrial accidents, technological disasters and catastrophes caused by large-scale safety failures, all of which have claimed countless lives. One such tragedy was the dynamite explosion at Iri Station in South Korea on 11 November 1977. This accident resulted in a staggering loss of life. It clearly demonstrated that inadequate safety systems for industrial explosives can lead to a catastrophe resulting in irreversible loss of life.

For many years, researchers, engineers and practitioners in the field have worked tirelessly to ensure that such tragedies never happen again.

Building on these lessons, G.Y.B – 11.11 R&R Day aims to establish 11 November as a meaningful international day of remembrance, on which humanity reflects on its shared responsibility to protect life.

The essence of this campaign is simple.

Commemoration – honouring those who gave their lives for peace and those who lost their lives in preventable tragedies.

Responsibility – a commitment to scientific integrity, a culture of safety, and the ethical use of knowledge and technology.

This sense of responsibility is particularly important given the involvement of professors, researchers and the university community.

In the Republic of Korea, 11 November is widely recognised as ‘Pepero Day’, a cultural observance during which people exchange modest gifts to reaffirm their bonds and affection. However, for us, this date transcends such everyday warmth and holds deeper, more solemn historical and ethical implications for humanity, as outlined below.

Firstly, at 11.11 am on 11 November, we hold the ‘Final Roll-call’ to honour the young souls who answered the call to defend freedom, particularly the UN veterans who did not return home. We observe a solemn moment of remembrance, respectfully calling out each name one by one to honour their noble sacrifice and express our deep respect and gratitude.

Secondly, 11 November is also a poignant anniversary of the Iri Station dynamite explosion disaster in the Republic of Korea. This tragedy starkly demonstrated how the lack of proper management of industrial explosives can lead to catastrophic consequences for humanity.

For the past 30 years or so, we have conducted in-depth research into this disaster and have devoted our full efforts to developing a system centred on the safe management and ethical use of industrial explosives, to ensure that such a tragedy is never repeated. We now propose to share this passionate endeavour—which we have pursued to safeguard human life and peace—with the noble spirit of the [Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences]. The ultimate aim of this research lies not merely in the perfection of technology, but solely in the protection of life and the maintenance of peace.

Our philosophy is deeply aligned with the ideals of ‘the social responsibility of science’ and ‘peace for humanity’ pursued by Alfred Nobel. We wish to extend this noble spirit more widely, in partnership with the international community and people across the globe.

To this end, we require the participation of the academic community, researchers, university staff, and every single member of the public. For those who express an interest, we intend to share the findings of our research and our system, broken down into Phases 1, 2 and 3, whilst gathering feedback and continuing our academic and ethical discussions. We are confident that the collective strength generated by the participation of every single professor, researcher and member of the general public who wishes to join us will be harnessed for the cause of world peace and the protection of life.

Furthermore, to promote this proposal and convey the memory of this event through visual and cultural means, we are preparing a commemorative exhibition in Stockholm, Sweden—Nobel’s hometown. By incorporating this day as a commemoration of humanity’s love, sharing and communication—celebrated by all of humanity—we aim to recognise it as a day centred on mourning and dignity, a day to reaffirm our commitment to safety. Our intention is to establish this day, born of sacrifice, as a [Day of Remembrance and Accountability for the Victims].

This exhibition centres on the embroidery works of the Korean artist Lee Jeong-sook and, through the labour and memories embodied in every single stitch, pays tribute to the sacrifices of UN veterans and those who lost their lives in industrial disasters.

11 November is a day on which the ‘number 1’—resembling the shape of a long biscuit—appears four times, and there is a unique tradition of sharing small gifts with loved ones to express one’s feelings.

On this day, people exchange Pepero as small gifts, sharing warm sentiments and gratitude with family, friends and loved ones. Over time, Pepero Day has come to symbolise communication, connection and the strengthening of relationships.

On 11 November, the streets of South Korea are filled with sweet words of encouragement exchanged between people.

This simple tradition of sharing, cherished by South Korea’s younger generation, actually illustrates a facet of humanity: **‘small gestures of kindness come together to create a strong sense of community’**.

Inspired by this spirit of sharing and connection—just as a small gift can convey sincere feelings and good intentions—I believe that Pepero Day can be a meaningful occasion to remember past sacrifices and share our collective responsibility for creating a safer and more peaceful world.

In our rigorous pursuit of data and evidence, we sometimes tend to view victims as mere statistics. However, we believe that true progress is measured by how we honour the memory of those we have lost.

11 November, 11.00 am.

To once again call out by their ‘names’ those who have been reduced to mere ‘numbers’ in the historical record. This is precisely what we propose: **‘Roll-call (The Final Roll Call)’**. This simple yet profound act of remembrance is the very essence of true humanism, which our academic and research fields should ultimately strive to achieve.

By breathing life back into these names, we can restore the dignity of the past and lay a safer foundation for the future.

In ‘Eunpyeong Peace Park’, a small park near Yeochon Station on the Seoul Metro in South Korea, there is a statue of William Hamilton Shaw (Seo Wi-ryeom II), a US Navy lieutenant who served in the Korean War of 25 June and was killed in action at the young age of 28.

Captain Shaw was born in 1922 in Pyongyang as the only son of William Earl Shaw, a missionary serving there. After graduating from high school, he travelled to the United States and was studying for a doctorate at Harvard University when he heard news of the outbreak of the Korean War; he enlisted but, tragically, was killed in action during the recapture of Seoul in 1950.

It is said that, despite his parents’ pleas for him to finish his studies first, Captain Shaw wrote the following letter: ‘Father, Mother! The Korean people are now struggling to defend their freedom in the midst of war. If I were to refuse to go now and instead wait until after the war, when peace has returned, to go as a missionary, that would be an act of cowardice that my conscience could never permit.’

Captain Shaw, who loved Korea more than the Koreans themselves, fell heroically in battle; yet his parents, wife, son and daughter-in-law, who honoured his spirit of sacrifice, subsequently came to Korea as missionaries and, carrying on his legacy, preached the Gospel to many people. Christians are people who take the lead in loving their country and who are willing to lay down even their lives for their friends. I pray that today may be a day in which we, just as the Lord sacrificed Himself for us, live a life of love, sacrifice and devotion to others.

A tribute to BTS’s ‘Dynamite’ from K-pop

Within K-culture, K-pop has produced globally popular artists. Whenever we compare cultures in the context of our work, BTS’s song ‘Dynamite’ springs to mind. Just as the lyrics suggest, ‘Dynamite’ has become a song whose beauty feels almost poetic.

Here are some of the lyrics.

The song ‘Dynamite’ by the band BTS was released as a tribute to humanity, which had been worn down by the [COVID-19] pandemic.

This is an homage to ‘Dynamite’.

The final roll call in ‘Roll-call’ pays homage to those who sacrificed their lives for peace, likening them to stars in the sky.

The term ‘hommage’ derives from the French word ‘hommage’ and refers to the deliberate creation of something similar to a specific person or work as an expression‎ of respect and reverence.

The dynamite explosion at Iri Station on 11 November 1977

The explosion at Iri Station (now Iksan Station) on 11 November 1977 claimed 59 lives, injured between 1,100 and 1,300 people, and left some 7,800 people homeless. This was the worst railway station explosion in the country’s history, caused by the explosion of explosives—including 22 tonnes of dynamite—following the careless handling of a candle by an escort on an explosives train.
Date, time and location of the accident	At around 9.15 pm on 11 November 1977, at Iri Station, Iri City, North Jeolla Province (now Iksan City).
Casualties	There were 59 fatalities and between 1,158 and 1,400 injured, bringing the total number of casualties to around 1,400.
Cause of the accident	The incident occurred when a guard employed by Korea Explosives fell asleep whilst a candle was burning, causing a fire to break out in a box of explosives.
Extent of the damage	A large crater, 15 metres deep and 30–40 metres in diameter, formed within the station premises, and extensive damage occurred within a radius of 500 metres to 4 kilometres , including the destruction of buildings and shattered windows.

Every year on 11 November, we visit the memorial tower to take time to remember the sacrifices made on that day and to reflect on our responsibilities.
