SDL Trados 2007 Release Notes

These release notes contain late-breaking information regarding this release. SDL strongly recommends that you read them in their entirety before starting to use SDL Trados 2007 and its applications.

About SDL Trados 2007

In this release, the set of SDL Trados applications has been enhanced to include many new features. These improvements are described in more detail in the What's New in SDL Trados 2007 tutorial available from the SDL Trados 2007 Start menu group and the SDL Trados Synergy User Guide.

SDL Trados 2007 is used with a softkey license. For more details on how the softkey license mechanism works and how to obtain and install softkey licenses, please see the Licensing SDL Trados 2007 chapter in the SDL Trados 2007 Installation Guide and the information provided in the SDL Support Center at http://support.sdl.com.

Software

SDL Trados 2007 is provided as is. You use SDL Trados 2007 at your own risk. SDL cannot take any responsibility for any kind of damage that occurs as a result of using SDL Trados 2007.

New Features in SDL Trados 2007

• SDL Trados Synergy 2007, the new project management automation application, is now bundled with SDL Trados 2007. Synergy provides project creation and management tools for SDL Trados. With Synergy, you can quickly create and distribute projects and track project progress in real-time. Project team members work with project files using the SDL Trados translation tools and can easily share project resources such as translation memories online. For more information on SDL Trados Synergy and its new features in this release, please see the new SDL Trados Synergy User Guide included with SDL Trados 2007.

• SDL Trados 2007 supports the Microsoft Office 2007 formats DOCX (Word 2007), PPTX (PowerPoint 2007) and XLSX (Excel 2007). These formats are supported in both SDL Trados and SDLX 2007. Microsoft Office 2003, XP (2002) and 2000 continue to be supported. For more information on these formats, please see the SDL Trados File Formats Reference Guide.

• SDL Trados 2007 runs on the Windows Vista operating system. Windows XP and Windows 2000 continue to be supported.

• SDL Trados 2007 features a new filter for Microsoft PowerPoint 2000-2003 files featuring significantly enhanced conversion times.

• All SDL Trados verification plug-ins, such as QA Checker or Generic Tag Verifier, can now be run in batch mode from within SDL Trados Synergy.

• SDLX 2007 features a new enhanced Create Project Wizard. The Create Project Wizard guides you through the process of creating a new translation project. You can save the settings specified in the Create Project Wizard to a project profile. The profile can then be used to create further projects. The Create Translations Wizard takes the translated project ITD files and generates translated versions of the original source language project files.

• Packages created with SDL's Enterprise solution for translation management, SDL TMS 2007, can be processed with SDL Trados Synergy 2007, allowing smooth integration between SDL's Enterprise and Desktop solutions used across the worldwide translation supply chain.

• SDL Trados 2007 features a new filter that can be used to convert plain text files based on regular expressions for marking up internal and external tags.

• The Find and Replace feature in TagEditor has been enhanced to allow searching for text in tags or text in target segments only and to allow the use of wildcards when executing searches.

• SDL Trados 2007 features a new XLIFF filter that supports the conversion of rich XLIFF documents to and from TradosTag.

Notices and Recommendations

• For information on the bug fixes and enhancements in SDL Trados 2007 SP1, please see the release notes for SP1 available separately. Contact your SDL representative for more information.

• Information for upgrade users:

  • SDL Trados 2007 supports side-by-side installation with SDL Trados 2006 and 7.x (except for SDLX 2007 which cannot be installed side-by-side with SDLX 2006). Please see the upgrade information further down for more information.
  • Users of Trados version 6.x/SDLX 2005 or earlier: For more information about upgrading to SDL Trados 2007 from previous versions of SDL Trados software, please see the information in the SDL Trados 2007 Installation Guide.

• Information on backward compatibility: As a result of supporting new languages such as Hindi and as part of its support lifecycle policy, SDL Trados 2007 does not support older generations of operating system and Office platforms, as follows:

  • Windows NT, Windows Millennium Edition and Windows 98SE are not supported. Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional, Windows 2003 Server and Windows Vista (all editions) are fully supported.
  • Office 97 is not supported. Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, Office 2003 and Office 2007 (Word, PowerPoint and Excel) are fully supported.
  • Translation memories created in versions 7.x/8.x of Translator's Workbench cannot be opened in earlier versions of Translator's Workbench (version 6.5 and earlier). This is due to the support for new languages and the ability to store Unicode content in any language in translation memory metadata fields such as text and attribute fields. You can, however, exchange translation memories between version 7.x (2006) and 8.x (2007) of Translator's Workbench without any problems.
  • By default, export files of Translator's Workbench translation memories are encoded in Unicode (UTF-8) in order to support the new languages and other Unicode content in translation memories. These export files can only be imported into version 7.x/8.x translation memories and cannot be exchanged with users of older versions. A backward-compatible export format is still available for use with older versions; however, this file format does not support any of the new Unicode-related enhancements.
  • Translation memories created in Translator's Workbench 7.x and earlier can be opened by and used in version 8.x of Translator's Workbench. In order to benefit from the Unicode-related feature enhancements, you must export the 6.5 or earlier translation memories in version 6.x or earlier and then import them into newly created version 8.x translation memories.

• Translator's Workbench 8.x as shipped with SDL Trados 2007 is compatible with the following SDL MultiTerm versions: MultiTerm 2007 (version 7.5) and previous 7.x releases, MultiTerm iX (version 6.x) and MultiTerm 5.5. SDLX 2007 is compatible with SDL MultiTerm 2007 and 7.x only. To avail of the new terminology features such as active terminology recognition across several terminology databases and quick term entry from Translator's Workbench and TagEditor, you must use MultiTerm 2007 or 7.x Desktop. For optimum performance, SDL recommends using MultiTerm 2007 (version 7.5) in conjunction with SDL Trados 2007.

• Translator's Workbench as shipped in SDL Trados 2007 should only be used with SDL Trados TM Server 2007, TM Server 2006 or TM Server 7.1 as a translation client. Issues may occur when working with TM Server 6.5 or TM Server 7.0. Likewise, Translator's Workbench 6.5 cannot open any server-based translation memories created with TM Server 8.x, since these translation memories make use of the new Unicode enhancements. Therefore, SDL recommends avoiding mixed setups of previous and current versions of TM Server and SDL Trados 2007.

• SDL Trados Synergy 8.0 as shipped in SDL Trados 2007 only supports version 8.0 packages and cannot open packages created with version 7.5. Therefore, SDL recommends avoiding mixed setups of previous and current versions of SDL Trados Synergy.

• During the upgrade period, you may want to have different versions of the SDL Trados translation solution co-exist on your computer. In this situation, SDL recommends the following:

  • Trados users: You can install SDL Trados 2007 on the same computer as previous versions (version 2006/7.x or earlier), provided that each version is installed to a separate folder. The default installation location for each version of the software is different.
  • Do not use different versions of the software at the same time. For example, close Translator's Workbench 7.x before registering and opening Translator's Workbench 8.x.
  • Do not run different versions of the same component at the same time. If you are using several tools at once, do not work with mixed versions of the software. For example, if you are translating files in TagEditor, use TagEditor 8.x with Translator's Workbench 8.x. Do not use TagEditor 8.x with Translator's Workbench 7.x and vice versa.
  • SDL recommends that you use the same version of the software to translate files from start to finish. Migrating files from an earlier to a later version of the software when the project has already started may result in data inconsistencies.
  • When alternating between two different versions, you must register the software you are about to use by executing a special self-registration batch file. The batch file for each version is accessed from the Start menu on your computer. To register version 8.x of the software, go to the Start menu on your computer and point to the program folder for SDL Trados 2007. In the program folder, select Register SDL Trados 2007 to execute the batch file for the version 8.x software. Once the register batch file has executed successfully, the software is ready for use.
  • SDLX users: It is not possible to keep previous versions of SDLX installed in parallel with SDLX 2007.

• SDL recommends that you continue using Trados 6.5 when working on projects generated by SDL TeamWorks 2.0.1 and GXT 6.4. However, using SDL Trados 7.x and SDL Trados 2006 on the client side is also supported when working on TradosTag-based files (TTX) generated by TeamWorks 2.0.1 or GXT 6.4, except Microsoft Office 2007, RC, Windows 32 Binary, Microsoft Word, InDesign INX, Java Properties and OpenOffice/StarOffice documents following the TradosTag workflow in version 8.x.

• SDL Trados 2007, SDL Trados 2006 or SDL Trados 7.1 can be used when working with projects generated by SDL TeamWorks 2006 and GXT 6.5.

• For more information about upgrading to SDL Trados 2007 from previous versions of SDL Trados software, please see the Upgrade and Compatibility Information section in the Installation Overview chapter in the SDL Trados 2007 Installation Guide.

System Requirements

Hardware

• The minimum specification to run SDL Trados 2007 is a PC with a 1 GHz Pentium III or higher compatible processor and 512 MB RAM. SDL recommends 1 GB RAM.

• A mouse or similar pointing device is required.

• A minimum of 300 MB of hard disk space should be available.

Companion Software

• SDL Trados 2007 features new filters for the Microsoft Office 2007 formats DOCX (Word 2007), PPTX (PowerPoint 2007) and XLSX (Excel 2007). These filters allow you to process Microsoft Office 2007 documents as TradosTag XML (TTX) documents in SDL Trados Synergy, Translator's Workbench/SDLX, TagEditor and WinAlign. For this to work correctly, the following applies:

  • Documents must have been saved in Microsoft Office 2007 in the new formats .docx, .pptx and .xlsx respectively.
  • TTX files created by the new Office file format filters can only be processed by SDL Trados 2007. SDL Trados 2006, 7.x or earlier do not support the processing of these TTX files.
  • It is not necessary to have Microsoft Office 2007 installed for processing the new file formats as TradosTag files. An installation of Microsoft Office is only required if you want to use the preview feature in TagEditor or SDLX.
• For more information on the new Office 2007 formats, please see the SDL Trados File Formats Reference Guide included with SDL Trados 2007.

• SDL Trados 2007 requires Microsoft Word 2000, 2002 (XP), 2003 or 2007 (running in compatibility mode) for processing Microsoft Word .doc or .rtf files. SDL Trados 2007 also ships with a file format filter for processing Microsoft Word .doc files directly (without falling back on Word for file format conversion). This filter allows you to process Microsoft Word .doc documents as TradosTag XML (TTX) documents in SDL Trados Synergy, Translator's Workbench/SDLX, TagEditor and WinAlign as an alternative to the traditional RTF-based workflow and to be able to use PerfectMatch for Microsoft Word .doc documents. For this to work correctly, the following applies:

  • Documents must have been saved in Microsoft Word 2000, Word 2002 (XP), Word 2003 or Word 2007 (using .doc as the file format in Word 2007).
  • TTX files created by the new Microsoft Word file format filter can only be processed by SDL Trados 2007, SDL Trados 2006 and SDL Trados 7.x; Trados 6.5 or earlier does not support the processing of these TTX files.
  • It is no longer necessary to have Microsoft Word installed for processing .doc files as TradosTag files. An installation of Microsoft Word is only required if you want to use the preview feature in TagEditor or SDLX.
• For more information on both the RTF and TTX-based workflow, please see the SDL Trados File Formats Reference Guide included with SDL Trados 2007.

• SDL Trados 2007 ships with a new file format filter for processing Microsoft PowerPoint 2000-2003 files directly (without falling back on PowerPoint for file format conversion). This filter allows you to process Microsoft PowerPoint presentations as TradosTag XML (TTX) documents in SDL Trados Synergy, Translator's Workbench/SDLX, TagEditor and WinAlign. For this to work correctly, the following applies:

  • Documents must have been saved in Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, 2002 (XP) or 2003.
  • TTX files created by the new PowerPoint file format filter can only be processed by SDL Trados 2007; Trados 2006, 7.x and 6.5 or earlier do not support the processing of these TTX files.
  • It is no longer necessary to have Microsoft PowerPoint installed for processing .ppt files. An installation of Microsoft PowerPoint is only required if you want to use the preview feature in TagEditor or SDLX.
• For more information on the new Microsoft PowerPoint filter, please see the SDL Trados File Formats Reference Guide included with SDL Trados 2007.

• SDL Trados 2007 ships with a file format filter for processing Microsoft Excel files as TradosTag documents directly in Translator's Workbench/SDLX, TagEditor and WinAlign. This feature has been present since Trados 6.5. For it to work correctly, SDL Trados 2007 requires Microsoft Excel 2000-2003 for processing Microsoft Excel documents. TTX files created by the file format filter can only be processed by version 6.5 or later of SDL Trados; Trados 6.0 and earlier cannot be used.

• SDL Trados 2007 ships with file format filter plug-ins for processing Windows software resources (.rc/.dlg files), Windows 32 binary software files (.exe, .dll, .ocx), InDesign INX, OpenOffice/StarOffice documents and Java Properties files as TradosTag documents directly in Translator's Workbench/SDLX, TagEditor and WinAlign. The Java Runtime Engine (JRE1.5.0_10) is required to translate these file types using TagEditor. JRE is included with SDL Trados 2007 for your convenience. TTX files created by these file format filters can only be processed by SDL Trados 2007 (8.x) and 2006 (7.x); Trados 6.5 and earlier cannot be used.

• SDL Trados 2007 ships with a new file format filter plug-in for processing text files (.txt) based on regular expressions for defining internal and external tags. TTX files created by this file format filter can only be processed by SDL Trados 2007 (8.x); SDL Trados 2006 or earlier cannot be used.

• To use some of the online Help systems, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher is required.

• SDL Trados 2007 requires Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0. If the .NET Framework 2.0 is not installed on your machine, it is automatically deployed by all setup programs. This might take a while to complete. In some cases, a reboot might be required before .NET Framework installation is complete.

Platforms

• SDL Trados 2007 runs under Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows 2000. Earlier operating system generations such as Windows NT and Windows 98 are not supported.

• SDL recommends that you remove support for any non-Western languages you do not work with from the Microsoft Office Language Settings and that you only use the languages that you translate into and from in Microsoft Word. For more information, please see the Microsoft Word online help system.

• Your display settings should be set to at least 256 colors (in Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display > Settings).

Language Support

• In general, language support in SDL Trados 2007 corresponds to the language support installed on your system. For more information about specific support for bi-directional, Asian/DBCS (Double Byte Character Set) and complex script languages in SDL Trados 2007 and SDL MultiTerm 7.x, please see the relevant online help.

Known Issues in SDL Trados 2007

• When accessing Translator's Workbench 8.x from within Microsoft Word 2007, performance issues may occur that cause slow navigation from segment to segment when using the Set/Close Next Open/Get or Translate to Fuzzy commands. SDL has escalated this issue to Microsoft who have confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word 2007. As a workaround until a fix is available, SDL recommends using Microsoft Word 2003 or translating Microsoft Word .doc and .docx files in SDL Trados TagEditor. SDL will inform the SDL Trados 2007 user base when a fix is available from Microsoft.

• After SDL Trados TagEditor has been running for approximately 60 minutes, the icons on TagEditor's Standard toolbar may get displaced. This does not have any effect on the functionality behind the toolbar buttons and is a cosmetic issue. As a workaround, SDL recommends accessing the commands on the toolbar using the corresponding menu commands and/or keyboard shortcuts. Restarting TagEditor also fixes this problem. SDL will fix this issue in a future Service Pack release.

• When using MultiTerm 7.1 or earlier with Translator's Workbench 8.x, an application error may occur with Translator's Workbench 8.x when exiting. This error does not cause any issues and does not occur with MultiTerm 2007 (version 7.5). SDL therefore recommends upgrading to MultiTerm 2007 to troubleshoot this problem.

• The new Microsoft Word 2007 .docx file format is not listed in Translator's Workbench in the Analyse and Translate dialog boxes. To work around this issue, select the All Files (*.*) file type from the Files of Type drop-down list to add Microsoft Word 2007 .docx files.

• When setting up new alignment projects in WinAlign, the file type on the General tab of the WinAlign Project dialog box may differ from the file types that are offered in the Files of Type drop-down list when adding files to the alignment project. To work around this issue, select "All Files" from the Files of type list in the Add Files dialog box, or drag and drop the files directly onto the Files tab.

• The application SDL Trados Glue can only be used for XML/HTML/SGML documents and TradosTag TTX documents derived from these ML formats and Workbench RTF documents. It cannot be used for any other file formats (such as Word .doc, for example), including TradosTag files based on these other formats. This is by design.

• Windows Vista: to run the Register SDL Trados 2007 batch files as available from the SDL Trados 2007 Start menu, you must right-click the batch file and select "Run as administrator". This will ask for permission to run the script with elevated permissions. This is by design on Windows Vista as part of the new UAC (User Account Control) feature.

• In SDL Trados 2007, all tag (.ini) and filter settings files (.xml) are no longer stored in the installation folder but rather in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SDL\Filters on Windows 2000/XP and \ProgramData\SDL\Filters on Windows Vista. To avoid Access Denied messages in TagEditor on closing XML/HTML/SGML files and in the SDL Trados Filter Settings application when saving filter settings, it is necessary to allow all users read/write access to this folder. Note: On localized operating systems, this folder structure partly uses names matching the language of the operating system. On a German Windows XP system, for example, it is called "\Dokumente und Einstellungen\All Users\Anwendungsdaten\SDL\Filters".

• When uninstalling MultiTerm 2007 after installing SDL Trados 2007, errors may occur in the Create Project Wizard in SDL Trados Synergy 2007 or other application components in SDL Trados 2007. To troubleshoot these errors, run a repair installation of SDL Trados 2007 via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

• Information on file format support for the recently released DTP applications Adobe FrameMaker 8.x, Adobe InDesign CS3, QuarkXPress 7 and BroadVision QuickSilver 3.0:

  • Adobe FrameMaker 8: The Unicode-based Adobe FrameMaker 8.x MIF format is not yet supported. As a workaround, you can save MIF documents in the legacy ANSI-based 7.x format and process them using Synergy or S-Tagger in the usual way. Support for FrameMaker 8.x MIF will be added to SDL Trados 2007 as soon as possible.
  • Adobe InDesign CS3: Adobe InDesign CS3 is not supported. Support for Adobe InDesign CS3 files will be added to SDL Trados 2007 as soon as possible.
  • QuarkXPress 7: QuarkXPress 7 files are supported through the third-party application, CopyFlow, when translating from Western languages into Western languages. Other codepages are currently not yet supported, since SDL Trados 2007 does not yet support the new Unicode-based UTF-16 output generated from CopyFlow for QuarkXPress 7. The Story Collectors for QuarkXPress also do not support Quark 7.x. For more information on CopyFlow, see http://www.napsys.com. Support for CopyFlow-generated Unicode-based QuarkXPress 7.x files will be added to SDL Trados 2007 as soon as possible.
  • BroadVision QuickSilver 3.0: BroadVision QuickSilver 3.0 is not supported. Support for this format is not planned at this stage.

• To be able to process Interleaf files with a .doc extension in SDL Trados Synergy 2007, you need to disable the Microsoft Word filter first so that there is no clash between the file extensions. To do this:

  • Exit SDL Trados 2007 if it is running.
  • Comment out or, if not needed, remove the MS Word filter entry from the PlugInFileFilterDefinitions.xml file of your SDL Trados 2007 installation.
  • Re-start SDL Trados 2007. Any .doc file should now be recognized and processed as an Interleaf file.

• When you add custom columns to any of the views using the Customize command on the View context menu of SDL Trados Synergy 2007, these columns might get added to the right-hand rather than left-hand side of the Gantt chart. If this happens, you can drag and drop such columns back to the left-hand side of the Gantt chart.

• This release ships with fully localized user interfaces in English, German, French, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese. Japanese is only available as a user interface language when your SDL Trados applications are installed on a localized Japanese operating system. All user guides and most online help systems are available in English only.

• SDL recommends using TagEditor 8.x or SDLX for all file formats when translating into the languages in SDL Trados 2007 which have been supported since version 7.x, such as Hindi, Telugu and Gujarati. This includes Microsoft Word documents which should be translated using the TradosTag-based Microsoft Word file format filter rather than using Microsoft Word as a front-end.

• For optimum alignment exports into translation memories for some of the more recently supported languages such as Hindi, SDL recommends using the TMX 1.4 export feature rather than TXT-based exports. Also, SDL recommends using Arial Unicode MS as a font for the new languages and switching to user-defined segment formatting in case of text display issues in WinAlign.

• For optimum performance of the new TradosTag-based file format filter for Microsoft Word .doc documents and for tips and tricks, SDL highly recommends reading the corresponding chapters in the SDL Trados File Formats Reference Guide. The following are known issues in the filter:

  • Many conversion issues with Microsoft Word files containing complex tables, text boxes, pictures etc., can be addressed by cleaning up the underlying document structures before conversion. To do this: copy the entire document contents into the Clipboard (Ctrl+A to select the entire document, Ctrl+C to copy its contents). Then create a new document (Ctrl+N), paste the document contents into the new document (Ctrl+V) and save it (Ctrl+S). You might have to reapply document templates or styles after doing this. These actions refresh the document structures and will help to troubleshoot conversion issues in most cases.
  • For optimum results for font mapping of Western to Asian and complex scripts fonts, please see the information in the SDL Trados File Formats Reference Guide.
  • Manual page or section breaks inside paragraphs are not supported. For optimum conversion results, SDL recommends inserting a paragraph mark in front of the manual break.

• When using the traditional RTF-based workflow for Microsoft Word documents, character corruption can occur when translating into or from non-Western languages such as Greek, Russian etc. In most cases, these issues can be addressed by installing support for Asian languages on your system both at Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office level.

• The preview of OpenOffice 2.0 documents does not work with documents whose file names contain extended characters, such as French or German special characters. To work around this issue, rename the files so that they do not contain any extended characters.

• Entering word forms into the Word List tab of the QA Checker may not work for non-Western European languages if you use an operating system whose default language does not match the language you want to use. As a workaround, enter the word forms into a text editor (such as Notepad) and then copy/paste them from there into the Word List text boxes, or import the word forms into the list from an external text file by using the Load button.

• SDL Trados 2007 includes the Bookmark Handler template for troubleshooting issues with hidden bookmarks and cross-references when using the traditional RTF-based workflow for Microsoft Word documents. The Bookmark Handler is an unsupported add-on to SDL Trados 2007 that is provided as is and that you use at your own risk. Issues with bookmarks and cross-references do not occur when using the new TradosTag-based file format filter for Microsoft Word.

• In some rare instances, the Translate to Fuzzy command does not work when you activate the Auto-Concordance feature and decide not to move the cursor into the Concordance dialog box after the search. If you encounter this issue, click once in any window in Translator's Workbench and then return to your editing environment. Translate to Fuzzy should now work as expected.

• It is not possible to change the names of open files in TagEditor using the new Properties dialog box available from the File menu. If you want to rename documents, SDL recommends using the Save As command in TagEditor, or renaming the files in Windows Explorer.

• To create a translation memory using SDL Trados TM Manager, make sure the languages this translation memory will use are installed on the middleware machine. Use Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional Options to install language support on the middleware machine. If you try to create a translation memory in a language that is not installed on the middleware, an error occurs.

• All known issues with InDesign files as documented below can be avoided by using the INX-based filter for InDesign CS2. For more information on this new filter, please see the SDL Trados File Formats Reference Guide. If you are still working with a previous InDesign version and use the Story Collector for InDesign 2.0 or InDesign CS 1.0, please note the following issues and workarounds:

  • Before exporting InDesign 2.0 and InDesign CS 1.0 documents using Story Collector for InDesign, make sure you delete the table of contents, index and any internal hyperlinks. Otherwise a large number of hyperlink elements are produced during the export of the InDesign file, leading to InDesign crashes or instability during re-import. Recreate the table of contents, index and internal hyperlinks after the files have been re-imported. Adobe has confirmed that these document elements cause problems in InDesign 2.0 and CS.
  • In some InDesign 2.0 and CS documents, stories may be assigned to the wrong text boxes when re-importing the document. Currently, there is no workaround or solution for this issue other than using the INX-based filter.
  • All soft returns in InDesign 2.0 documents are replaced with hard returns after re-importing the translated stories into InDesign 2.0. This problem has been fixed in the Story Collector for InDesign CS.
  • When using the Story Collector for InDesign, extended characters may not display correctly in the Story Order dialog box. To make extended characters display correctly, you must install the Arial Unicode MS font using the Fonts Control Panel item in Windows. The Arial Unicode MS font ships with Microsoft Office as the Office Tools > International Support > Universal Font feature.
