[It ~ that 강조 구문-1]

 I met Naomi here yesterday.

위의 문장은 ‘나는 어제 거기서 나오미를 만났다’ 는 뜻이다.
그렇지만, 위와 같이 밋밋한 문장에 다음과 같이 강조하는 어감을 주고 싶을 때는 어떻게 할까?

 (1) 내가 어제 여기에서 만난 것은[=사람은] (바로) 나오미였어.
 (2) 내가 어제 앨리를 만난 곳은 (바로) 여기였어.
 (3) 내가 여기에서 도언을 만난 것은 (바로) 어제였어.
 (4) 어제 여기에서 네이트를 만난 것은[=사람은] (바로) 나였어.

이럴 때 바로 [It is _____ that ...] 강조구문을 이용한다.

위에서 강조되는 대상은 각각의 사람, 여기, 어제, 그리고 나 이다!

그 강조되는 대상을 빈 [It was ______ that...]의 빈칸에 놓고 나머지는 that 뒤에 그대로 연결하면 된다.

 (1‘) It was Naomi that I met ____ here yesterday.
 (2‘) It was here that I met Ally ____ yesterday.
 (3‘) It was yesterday that I met Do-eon here ________.
 (4‘) It was I that met _____ Nate here yesterday.

cf1) 위에서 전체 시제를 과거로 표현하는 것이 적절하기 때문에 It 뒤에 is가 아니라 was를 썼음.
cf2) (1')과 (4‘)는 강조 대상이 사람이므로 아래와 같이 that 대신에 [who]를 쓰는 경우도 있다.

 (1") It was Naomi who(m) I met ____ here yesterday.
 (4") It was I who ____ met Nate here yesterday.

What is it that he wants?

위의 문장은 ‘도대체 그가 원하는 게 무엇이냐?’ 라는 뜻인데, 앞에서 보았던 [It is ____ that 강조구문]의 변형이다. 위의 문장이 나오게 된 과정을 보면 다음과 같다.

 a. He wants the laptop computer. (그는 그 휴대용 컴퓨터를 원한다.)

 b. It is the laptop computer that he wants. (그가 원하는 것은 그 휴대용 컴퓨터이다.)

 그럼, 위의 (b) 문장을 한 단계 발전시켜서 Yes/No-의문문과 Wh-의문문을 만들면 어떻게 될까? 아래의 (c, d)와 같은 문장이 나오겠지용.

 c. Is it the laptop computer that he wants? (그가 원하는 것이 그 휴대용 컴퓨터입니까?)
 d. What is it that he wants? (그가 원하는 것이 도대체 무엇입니까?)

[ It is ~ that 강조 구문-3]

  It wasn't until we were married that I realized what kind of person he is.

[It is not until ~ that]구문은 [~하고 나서야 비로소 ~하다]는 의미로 일종의 관용구문일걸요.

그래서, 위의 문장은 다음과 해석할 수 있다.

 “우리가 결혼하고 나서야 비로소 나는 깨달았다 / 그가 어떤 종류의 사람인지.”

 그러나, 맨 위의 문장을 잘 보면 [It is ~ that] 강조구문의 형식을 띠고 있음을 알 수 있다.
따라서, 강조구문으로 변화되기 이전의 문장이 위와 같은 [It is not until ~ that]의 형식을 취하기까지의 과정은 다음과 같다.

a. I didn't realize what kind of person he is until we were married.
(나는 깨닫지 못했다 / 그가 어떤 종류의 사람인지 / 우리가 결혼하기 전까지는.)
(=> 우리가 결혼하고 나서야 나는 그가 어떤 종류의 사람인지 깨달았다.)

b. I realized what kind of person he is not until we were married.
c. I did realize what kind of person he is not until we were married.
d. It was not until we were married that I realized what kind of person he is.

(a)에서 (d)로 변환되는 과정의 중간 단계로 (b-c)의 문장을 생각해 볼 수 있겠다.
* 참고로 (a)의 문장에서 (b, c)의 단계를 거쳐, 아래와 같이 부정부사어구가 주어 앞으로 도치된 구문도 가능하다.
I didn't realize what kind of person he is until we were married.
-> Not until we were married did I realize what kind of person he is.

(위에서 Not until~ 이 주어 앞으로 도치되었는데, 이 때 (조)동사 did가 주어 I 앞으로 빠져나간다는 사실에 주목해야 할까요?!.)

힌트: 강조되기 이전의 문장은 각각 다음과 같다.
(a) You are responsible for it.
(b) Mosquitoes cause malaria.
(c) Mary loved Mr. Brown.
(d) The incident took place in this room.

[Test] 2. 다음 문장을 (A) It is ___ that... 강조구문과, (B) Not until...을 주어 앞으로 도치시킨 문장으로 전환해보숑.

1. I didn't become aware of my foolishness until the accident happened.
(A) ->
(B) ->

2. Japan didn't feel strong enough for a real test of arms until 1894.
(A) ->
(B) ->

1. 나는 나의 어리석음을 깨닫지 못했다 / 그 사고가 일어나기 전까지.
(A) It was not until the accident happened that I became aware of my foolishness.
(B) Not until the accident happened did I become aware of my foolishness.

2. 일본은 무력을 실제로 시험해볼 만큼 충분히 강해졌다고 느끼지 않았다 / 1894년이 되기 전까지는.

(A) It was not until 1894 that Japan felt strong enough for a real test of arms.
(B) Not until 1894 did Japan feel strong enough for a real test of arms.
