Chapter 4. The Free Gift
"Furthermore, Subhuti, Bodhisattva should not attach to any dharma when practicing generous giving; that is to say, the generous giving without the mind attached to form, generous giving without the mind attached to sound, smell, taste, tactile object or dharma. Subhuti, thus Bodhisattva ought to make generous giving just like this without attaching it to any notions. Why? Because, if Bodhisattva makes generous giving without being attached to any notions, the resultant merit and happiness will be immeasurable. Subhuti, do you think the space in the Eastern Quarter measurable?"
"No. I don't, World honoured One(세존(世尊))!"
"Subhuti, can you measure the space in the Southern, Western, and Northern Quarters, including the zenith and nadir?"
"No, World Honoured One!"
"Subhuti, the happiness and merit that would result from the practice of generous giving without being attached to any notions[상(相)] are also immeasurable just like that. Subhuti, the Bodhisattva ought to keep the teachings just as taught."

Even the Most Beneficent Practices are Relative
Furthermore, Subhuti, in the practice of charity a Bodhisattva should be detached. That is to say,he should practise charity without regard to appearances; without regar to sound, odour, touch, flavour or any quality. Subhuti, thus should the Bodhisattva practise charity without attachment. Wherefore? In such a case his merit is incalculable. Subhuti, what do you think? Can you measure all the space extending eastward? No, World-honoured One, I cannot. Then can you, Subhuti, measure all the space extending southward, westward, northward, or in any other direction, including nadir and zenith? No, World-honoured One, I cannot. Well, Subhuti, equally incalculable is the merit of the Bodhisattva who practises charity without any attachment to appearances. Subhuti, Bodhisattvas should persevere one-pointedly in this instruction.
