They all work for a subsidiary of Halliburton, the largest contractor in the country. The company has, in its words, lost about thirty people in the Kuwait, Iraq region during the last year, and several of its employees are now rethinking their involvement there.   After spending four long months driving fuel rigs in Iraq, Steve Herring and Stacy Clark came home today to Huston.   "The military is doing their job. But it's just... it's not safe enough to run... unarmed as a civilian over there."   The $80,000 tax-free salary was not worth the risk. In a written statement, their former employer, Kellog, Brown & Root announced that KBR employees and subcontractors have made courageous decisions to work in Iraq. But Herring and Clark say their colleagues are leaving in droves. They count eighty people who just quit. Drivers, security guards and other workers.   "They have bullet holes in their trucks. Every time they go, something happens. They're stoned or they're shot at."   The company has been putting out ads for a year, looking for help rebuilding Iraq, and they are offering six-figure salaries, all tax-free. At job fairs around the country, KBR has been handing out positions as soon as they can be filled.   'No experience?', KBR's website says, 'You're still hired.' It was that same website Thomas Hamill turned to when he ran into financial trouble here in Macan, Mississippi. "He was doing what he thought was best for his family." Will the kidnappings of civilian workers in Iraq have a chilling effect on the recruiting efforts of American companies in the rebuilding effort? If the wife of Steve Herring is any indication, 'yes'.   "I'd just soon be poor, you know, and eat beans. I don't care. You know. I just want him back home." Which she says is worth all the money in the world.
