Summary:
Jesus declares that He is the door for the sheep and the good shepherd who lays down His life for them. Unlike thieves and hired hands who abandon the sheep, He protects and cares for them. He willingly sacrifices Himself, with the authority to lay down His life and take it back, as commanded by the Father. He also speaks of other sheep who will join His flock, uniting under one shepherd.
Teaching:
“For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it back. No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it back. This commandment I received from My Father.”
Jesus is saying that His death and resurrection are for the purpose of gaining us and giving us life. This is the most important thing. And when He carries this out, the Father loves Him.
No one takes His life from Him; He lays it down of His own will. This commandment He received from God.
Jesus lived only according to the Father's command. Likewise, we must deny ourselves, lay ourselves down, and look only to Jesus, living with the hope of resurrection in order to receive salvation.
Only then can we receive the love of the Father.
