<오늘의 말씀>
<오늘의 묵상>
<오늘의 결단>
English Devotional Column | October 27, 2026 | Yesan Sujeong Church : Become a Disciple First
<Today's Scripture>
“And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.’”
— Matthew 3:17
<Today's Reflection>
“Unless you are first a disciple yourself, you can never make others disciples.”
(Oswald Chambers)
<English Devotional Column : Become a Disciple First>
When Jesus was baptized, a voice from heaven declared, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Jesus was the Son in whom the Father delighted. His ministry was rooted in His relationship with the Father, and His entire life was marked by obedience to the Father's will.
Oswald Chambers reminds us that before we can make disciples of others, we must first become disciples of the Lord ourselves. We may teach the Bible, set an example of faith, and encourage others to follow Jesus. But if our own lives are not shaped by obedience to God's Word, our teaching may lose its power and credibility.
Being a disciple of Jesus means more than attending church or gaining biblical knowledge. It means listening to His Word, obeying His commands, and bringing our thoughts, desires, and plans into alignment with His will. Before seeking to change others, we must allow the Lord to transform our own hearts and lives.
Jesus gave His disciples this command:
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19 (NIV)
Jesus did not simply tell His followers to bring people into the church. He commanded them to make disciples and teach them to obey everything He had commanded. This is a mission entrusted to those who are themselves learning to follow and obey the Lord.
Of course, we do not have to be perfect before we can help others become disciples. We remain weak and imperfect, yet we are called to depend on the Lord daily and continue walking in obedience to His Word. What matters is not that we have become flawless, but that we never stop following Jesus.
Today, before asking what we should teach others, we need to ask ourselves an important question:
“Am I living as a disciple who learns from Jesus and obeys His Word?”
Our lives influence others at home, in church, and in the workplace. When we love the Lord and obey His Word, others can begin to see Jesus through our words, attitudes, and actions.
Become a faithful disciple of the Lord today. Then serve others so that they, too, may become disciples of Jesus through the witness of your life. This is the mission of making disciples that the Lord has entrusted to us.
<Today's Prayer of Commitment>
Lord, help me become a disciple who first learns from Your Word and obeys it before seeking to teach others. May my life, not merely my knowledge or words, reveal the love and truth of Jesus. Please use me to raise up disciples of Christ in my family, church, and community. In Jesus' name, Amen.
