Today's Devotional Column | October 28, 2026 | Yesan Sujeong Church : We Are Justified by the Grace of Jesus, Not by Repentance
<Today's Scripture | Proverbs 2:2 (NIV)>
“turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding”
<Oswald Chambers' Devotional Thought>
“We are not made righteous because we have repented of our sins, but solely because of what Jesus Christ has accomplished.”
<Related Scripture | Romans 5:10 (NIV)>
“For if, while we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!”
<Today's Reflection : We Are Justified by the Grace of Jesus, Not by Repentance>
When we sin, we must repent. However, repentance itself is not what makes us righteous before God. No matter how sincerely we repent or how hard we try to live a good life, we cannot completely solve the problem of sin through our own efforts.
How, then, can we become righteous before God? The answer is found in Jesus Christ alone. While we were still sinners, Jesus demonstrated God's love for us by dying on the cross. Our righteousness is not based on our merits or good deeds, but on the work of Jesus, who died for us and rose again.
Repentance is not a price we pay to become righteous. Rather, it is the response of faith by which we turn back to God after recognizing the grace of Jesus. We confess our sins and turn away from them, but we do not rely on our repentance as our source of righteousness. Instead, we trust in Jesus Christ, who forgives us and makes us new.
Today's verse in Proverbs teaches us to turn our ears to wisdom and our hearts to understanding. True wisdom does not lie in proving how righteous we are. It lies in relying on the righteousness of Jesus rather than our own. When we lay aside self-righteousness and trust in the grace of the cross, we can come before God with confidence, freed from condemnation and despair.
Today, instead of relying on your own efforts and merits, reflect deeply on the saving grace that Jesus has already accomplished. Give thanks for His grace, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, turn away from sin and live in obedience to the Lord's will.
<Key Sentence> I am not justified by the merit of my repentance, but by the saving grace accomplished through Jesus Christ.
<Today's Commitment> Lord, I will not boast in my own righteousness, but will live by trusting in the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ alone.
