Summary:
Some Greeks ask to see Jesus, prompting Him to declare that His hour has come to be glorified. He speaks about His impending death using the image of a grain of wheat dying to bear fruit. Jesus calls His followers to serve and follow Him, even through self-sacrifice. He expresses inner turmoil but affirms His purpose, and a voice from heaven confirms God’s glory. Jesus explains that His death will bring judgment on the world and defeat Satan. He urges people to believe in the Light while they still have it, so they may become children of Light, before withdrawing from the crowd.
Teaching:
The cross is not merely a death, but a judgment on this world and the decisive moment when Satan’s power is broken. This death of Jesus on the cross became the event that leads unbelievers to salvation.
So Jesus said to them, “For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; also, the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.” These things Jesus proclaimed, and He went away and hid Himself from them.
In the Old Testament, the Messiah was also prophesied as the Light, and Jesus once again declares that He is that Light—the Messiah.
Jesus told the people to remain in the Light, not to be overtaken by the darkness, and that if they believe in the Light, they will become sons of Light.
When we believe in Jesus, we are freed from the power of darkness and become children of God.
