Summary:
As Jesus prepares for His crucifixion, He shows His deep love for His disciples by humbly washing their feet during the Passover meal. This act symbolizes spiritual cleansing and servanthood. Peter initially resists, not understanding, but Jesus explains that unless He washes him, Peter can have no part with Him. Jesus affirms that the disciples are clean -but not all - referring to Judas, who would betray Him.
Teaching:
Jesus acted with full awareness of the time. He knew that God the Father had entrusted all things into His hands—specifically, the task of carrying the burden of death on the cross.
“If I do not wash you, you have no place with Me.”
This means that unless Jesus washes Peter’s feet, Peter has no part with Him. The phrase “have a place with Me” refers to having a share or portion. Only when Jesus washes someone’s feet can that person receive a share from Him. It means to reign with Jesus in His kingdom - to receive a portion of eternal life in the New Jerusalem and live there forever.
Be a person whose whole body is clean but still washes their feet. In other words, believe in Jesus with all your heart and repent daily. Some people become evil because they are weak, while others stumble because they are inherently evil. Though our faith may be weak at times, we must not become evil. Let us wash our feet daily and pursue a complete and mature faith.
