Tell me not, in mournful numbers,

"Life is but an empty dream!"

For the sould is dead that slumbers,

And things are not what they seem.

​슬픈 사연으로 내게 말하지 말라.

"인생은 한낱 헛된 꿈에 지나지 않는다고"

잠자는 영혼은 죽은 것이니

만물은 외양에 나타난 그대로가 아니다.

Life is real! Life is earnest!

And the grave is not its goal;

"Dust thou art, to dust returnst,"

Was not spoken of the soul.

인생은 진실한 것! 인생은 진지한 것!

무덤이 그 목적지는 아니다.

너는 본래 흙이니. 흙으로 돌아가리라.

이 말은 영혼을 말한 것이 아니다.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,

Is our destined end or way;

But to act, that each to-morrow

Find us farther than to-day.

우리가 가야 할 곳, 혹은 가는 길은

향락도 아니며 슬픔도 아니다.

저마다 내일이 오늘보다 낫도록

행동하는 그것이 목적이고 갈 길이다.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,

And our hearts, though stout and brave,

Still, like muffled drums, are beating

Funeral marches to the grave.

예술은 길고 세월은 빠르다.

우리의 심장은 튼튼하고 용감하지만

마치 싸맨 북과 같이, 무덤을 향해

여전히 장송곡을 울리는구나.

In the world's broad field of battle,

In the bivouac of Life,

Be not like dumb, driven cattle!

Be a hero in the strife!

​이 세상의 넓은 싸움터에서

인생의 야영지에서

말 못하고 쫓기는 짐승처럼 되지 말고

싸움터에서 영웅이 되라.

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant!

Let the dead Past bury 'its dead!

Act,-act in the living Present!

Hear within, and God o'erhead!

아무리 즐거운 미래라도 믿지 말라!

죽은 과거는 죽은 채 묻어 두라!

행동하라 - 살아있는 현재에 행동하라 !

가슴속에는 심장이 있고, 머리 위에는 신이 있다!

Lives of great men all remind us

We can make our lives sublime,

And departing, leave behind us

Footprints, on the sands of time;-​

위인들의 삶은 우리를 깨운다,

우리의 삶도 숭고해질 수 있다고,

그리고 떠날 때

시간의 모래 위에 우리의 발자국을 남길 수 있음을.

Footprints, that perhaps another,

Sailing o'er life's solemm main,

A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,

Seeing shall take heart again.

그 발자취는 뒷날에 다른 사람이,

장엄한 인생의 바다를 건너가다가

파선되어 버려진 형제가 보고

다시금 용기를 얻게 될지니

Let us, then be up and doing,

With a heart for any fate;

Still achieving, still pursuing,

Learn to labour and to wait.

그러니 일어나 나가자.

어떠한 운명도 헤쳐 나갈 마음으로

끊임없이 성취하고 끊임없이 추구하면서!

일한 다음 기다리는 법을 배우자.
