Summary:
Jesus tells His disciples that the defining mark of being His followers is their love for one another. When Peter asks where Jesus is going, Jesus says Peter cannot follow now but will later. Peter insists he is ready to die for Jesus, but Jesus foretells that Peter will deny Him three times before the rooster crows.
Teaching:
Acting according to the confession we make to the Lord requires a process. The sincerity of that confession is always there, but so are our limitations.
Today, like Peter, we live in a reality where we are weak and evil to the point of denying Jesus three times. Even if our confession is genuine, we are still weak and sinful. That is why we must follow the series of events—Jesus’ death, resurrection, ascension, and His devotion to prayer.
The problem today is that although we believe in Jesus, there is no process of following Him. Instead of using the Bible as our textbook for this journey, we rely on our own judgment.
We ask, “Lord, where are You going?” but are we truly there with Him? If we are with the Lord where He is going, then God, who fulfills His divine plan, will bring about the fruit of His Word. If there is no such fruit of the Word, it means we have not truly followed Jesus.
However, let us not despair over the fact that we have not followed Him until now. Just as Peter had great determination but still faced his limits, we are the same. Yet, through words like these, we must say, “I will follow Jesus,” and indeed follow Him—experiencing a series of events, the greatest of which is receiving the Holy Spirit and becoming filled with Him.
