Summary:
Jesus says that those who love Him will keep His commandments. He promises to send the Holy Spirit—the Spirit of truth—to be with His followers forever. The world cannot receive the Spirit, but His disciples know Him. Jesus assures them He will not leave them as orphans and will come to them. Though the world won’t see Him, His followers will, and they will live because He lives. Those who love Jesus and keep His commands will be loved by the Father, and Jesus will reveal Himself to them. He and the Father will dwell with those who love and obey Him. Those who do not love Jesus do not keep His words, which come from the Father.
Teaching:
The one who loves Jesus keeps His commandments. The one who does not love Jesus does not keep His commandments. A person who does not keep Jesus’ commandments is someone who does not love Him.
Before today’s passage, the love mentioned refers to God’s love for us and Jesus’ love for His disciples. After today’s passage, it shifts to the love of the disciples for Jesus, and our love for Jesus.
By believing in Jesus, we come to know Him. To know Jesus means to see the Father in Him. If one cannot see God the Father in Jesus, then their faith in Jesus is not complete. Our faith is connected to knowledge, and through that knowledge, we come to see God the Father and the Holy Spirit in Jesus.
Our true faith is shown by whether we keep Jesus’ words in our speech and actions. And when we do keep them, the result should be clearly reflected in our lives — in our inner selves, at work, in our children, and in our marriage.
