Summary:
Jesus warns His disciples that the world will hate and persecute them just as it hated and persecuted Him. This hatred stems from the fact that they no longer belong to the world, having been chosen by Him. The world’s rejection of Jesus and His followers reveals its ignorance of God. Jesus’ words and works have exposed their sin, removing any excuse. Despite this hostility, the Holy Spirit ("the Helper") will come to testify about Jesus, and the disciples must also bear witness, since they have been with Him from the beginning.
Teaching:
To live by faith is to live with caution. When we love others with the love of Jesus, there are times—sometimes often—when people will hate us. At times, it may be because they simply dislike us, but there are also times when we are hated because of the name of Jesus. In truth, they hate us because they hate Him.
Jesus does not belong to this world. He reveals the sin of the world. That is why the world hated Him and crucified Him. If we belong to Him, the world will not leave us alone. The world loves those who belong to it, but if we do not belong to the world, it will not love us.
The reason the world tries to harm us or isolate us through hatred is to separate us from Jesus. So when we suffer for our faith, we must remember that it is because the world hates Jesus—and in those times, we must rely on Him even more and remain in Him.
If you truly want to live well and live happily, do not belong to the world. Instead, belong to Jesus, love one another, and become the blessed holy people of God, through whom all that Jesus has spoken to us will be fulfilled.
