Summary:
Jesus warns His disciples about upcoming persecution so they won't fall away. He tells them they will be expelled from synagogues and even killed by people who think they're serving God. This will happen because those people do not truly know God or Jesus. Jesus didn’t mention this earlier because He was with them, but now that He is returning to the Father, the disciples are filled with sorrow instead of asking where He is going.
Teaching:
We know through the Word where Jesus is going. We also know what He went through.
We know that Jesus died, rose again, ascended into heaven, and poured out the Holy Spirit, and that He will return when God's plan for this earth is fulfilled. We also have some understanding of what will happen when Jesus comes again.
If we are people who believe in Jesus, we do not need to be surprised or troubled by anything that happens in this world. We live with the mindset that, when Jesus returns to judge all things, all we need to do is stand on His side.
