Major economic activities are tourism and agriculture (spices, cocoa, bananas). Gradual recovery from the disastrous post-independence flirtation with Marxism. A free market economy today, growing at around 6% annually. Unemployment 20%. HDI 0.777; 52nd/174. Public debt 35% of GNP. Income/person $2,900 (10% of USA).
French rule 1650-1783, when ceded to Britain. Independent in 1974 as a parliamentary monarchy. Independence has proved stormy with bizarre dictatorships, repression and two increasingly Marxist coups; the last of which provoked the US invasion of 1983 and restoration of democratic government. A stable constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democratic form of government since then.
There is complete freedom of religion.

1 The traumatic events of 1974-1984 still have reverberations two decades later, but praise God for stability and the healing of many of the pains and divisions of society.
1 Much of the population is nominally Catholic because of the earlier French legacy, but Evangelicals have steadily grown in numbers and influence since independence. The major problems to be faced:
a) Lack of unity and suspicion between denominations which result in little cooperation in outreach and missions. Pray for a closer fellowship and common vision to increase.
b) Widespread nominalism even in evangelical congregations. The illegitimacy rate is 82% and there is little known of a stable two-parent family – in part a tragic legacy of the slave culture of earlier centuries.
2 Pray that Grenadian churches might begin to assume more responsibility and initiative in evangelism and church planting.
3 Missionary vision is lacking. Pray for the YWAM team which is seeking to train and send out West Indian missionaries to unreached peoples elsewhere in the world.
