Sumbul / Asafetida is a perennial herb native to central and western Asia / Afganistian and Iran. Its thick, brown, spongy rootstock produces a stem with alternate, pinnately decompound leaves with thread like segments. The small, yellow flowers grow in compound, many-rayed umbels.

Antispasmodic + nervine / carminative, expectorant, lasative, sedative. Sumbul's antispasmodic properties have made it useful for asthma and bronchitis. It has also been used in the past for hysteria, for hypochondria, and for general debility &  neurasthenia. The rootstock's musky odor makes it a good substitute for musk oil. Asafetida acts as a local stimulant to mucous membrane, particularly that of the alimentary canal. It has been found useful for whooping cough, asthma, and bronchitis, as well as for croup and flatulent colic in infants. It was formerly used as a sedative for hysteria, infantile convulsions, and spasmodic nervous conditions.
5 사용법
- 사향뿌리 우리기; 1리터의 물에 1티스푼
. 하루 2-3회 한모금 음용
- 아위 파우더; 6월에 개화전 4년생의 뿌리를 잘라 즙채취
. 건조되면 갈색 파우더가 되고
. 메스꺼운 맛이므로 3개 섭취
- 팅크; 사향뿌리는 2-5방울
. 아위는 1/2-1 티스푼 
Infusion for Sumbul; Steep 1 tsp. rootstock and roots in 1 pint water. Take in mouthful doses, two or three times a day.
Powder for Asafetida; In June the roots of four year old plants which have not flowered are cut to collect the milky juice. This dries to a brownish, grummy substance which is divided into lumps or powdered. Because of its nauseating taste, asafetida is usually taken in 3 grain pills.
Tincture; A dose is from 2 to 5 drops for Sumbul and 0.5 to 1 tsp. for Asafetida.
